Evans, "and the public at large of the absolute falsehood of recent reports that have been circulated by so-called officers, managers, secretaries and solicitors of the Hood River Gas & Electric Company. Statements they have used in order to pursuade our patrons to break their contracts and get in on the ground floor with them with cheap rates while there is yet time. Also they have re ported that the Hydro Electric Company had come under their control." We wish to say to the president of the Hydro Electric Company and the general public that no such reports emanated from this office. Two men employed to trace this rumor down came back to us with the statement that they were the utterances of linemen, who had been dis charged by the Hydro Electric Company, who claim to have seen the notice of the sale in some of the big eastern papers. In reply to Mr. Evans' next paragraph we wish to say, and we stand ready to prove, that the $50,000.00 of capital stock of the Hood River Gas & Electric Company was not issued in payment of a lot of rocky lands and water rights at a fictitious valuation, but was fully paid up in actual cash deposited largely in a local bank before the company began to do business; that this stock was not subscribed or paid for by the Pacific Power & Light Company or by fund3 coming directly or indirectly from that company, and that the Pacific Power & Light Company neither owns or controls one share of stock in the Hood River Gas & Electric Company. The suggestion, therefore, that this company is not in good faith in failing to offer customers a con tract with the Pacific Power & Light Company is absurd and malicious on its face, as not only are our contracts perfectly secured (and we have offered to guarantee any doubting customer in regard thereto) but the Pacific Power & Light Company is not doing business in this city and has no means for performing an electric contract here. This fact is as well known to the Hydro Electric Company as to anyone else, and the suggestion made in their advertisement therefore is for no other purpose than to mislead and deceive the public. On the other hand what security have you for the permanent performance of the contract signed by the Hydro Electric Company? The minimum possible amount has been actually invested by the Hydro Electric Company in its plant, and its land and water rights, although taken into the company, at a roseate stock value, are valuable, if at all, principally for present speculative purposes. Whatever the plant and lands are worth, they could all be sold outright to a purchaser without necessitating the purchaser being bound by the contract, leaving no security whatever to the present Hydro contract holders for their performance. A two-third vote of the stock of the company is sufficient to sell out its property and it cannot be denied that the sale has been attempted and will be made whenever the controlling interest in the Hydro Electric Company can get "their price." The sooner all of the citizens of Hood River understand that the Hydro Electric Company is not a charitable institution, or has any other purpose than that of obtain ing a fancy price for its property solely by reason of it3 "nuisance value," the sooner the gen eral purposes and motives of the present recurring attacks from the officers of the Hydro Electric Company and the real value that should be given them will be understood. As far as the Hood River Gas & Electric Company is concerned in its present campaign, its sole object is to furnish electric service of character and at prices so satisfactory that it will recover its former customers and the good will of the business purchase from the Pacific Power & Light Company. This purpose it has consistently carried out. Many of our former custo mers have been misled by misrepresentation into temporarily leaving our lines for the service of the Hydro Electric Company, but we are glad to say that we have recently regained eleven representative customers (not "two" as stated in Mr. Evans advertisement) and many others have given notice of their intention of coming back to our service. Even were Mr. Evans' statement true, that we are running at a loss, we should persist to the utmost in our purpose of protecting the people of the city of Hood River against the inflated and unnecessary expense attempted to be saddled upon the former company by forcing the pur chase of an additional electric property upon it at a fictitious price, the purpose of which would have necessarily caused the levy of an additional burden upon the citizens of the city. This company has never made any overtures or attempted any negotiations, either directly or indi rectly for the purchase of the Hydro Electric property, although many suggestions and over tures have vainly been made to us by apparent "outside parties" looking to such a purchase, which we are satisfied were not without the authority of the persons who could deliver the goods. The last paragraph of Mr. Evans' statement reads prettily enough, but the pity is that the thinking people of Hood River are not so easily influenced by flattery and words as the writer of that paragraph evidently supposes. They know that the Hydro plant was not constructed as a philanthrophy. They are commencing to realize that they are fostering a promotion scheme, which if successful will fill the pockets of the promoters from their own. They are beginning to appreciate that it is not the part of wisdom or common sense to lend aid to a project whose inception was an economic extravagance forced upon them and can mean nothing but an addi tional burden. As read between the lines the burden of Mr. Evans' announcement seems to be his disap pointment that the rumor of the sale of the Hydro Plant to thejlood River Gas & Electric Com pany was really a rumor instead of having been true.
