The Union Meeting It is a source of congratulation that the Union meeting Saturday resulted as it did. This state ment does not apply to the par ticular set of directors who were elected, but it does apply to the absence of the bitterness or vin dii'tiveness which might have been engendered in the course of a contest in which the issues wore so sharply drawn. Leaders and followers upon both sides are to be complimented upon the tol eration and fairmindedness with which, to all appearances, they viewed the contest and the re sult It was apparent through out the meeting that beneath the differences of opinion as to the fitness of the two seta of dele gates there was a deepseated conviction" that all alike had at heart the interests of the great co-operative organization which has accomplished so much for the Hood River apple grower. It is a significant fact that when the result of the contest was made known several of the defeated candidates were heard to express the hope that the suc eesssul board would "make good." The feeling, so far as it could be determined, was, that the majority had decided and that the newly-elected board should.be given every possible opportunity. That they are fac ing some large problems in the matter of furnishing adequate storage facilities and in market ing the big crop which is expect ed this fall, there is none to deny. Their friends are confident that they are fully equipped to fulfill these duties in a capable and efficient manner. Furthermore, there is nothing to indicate but what those whom they have su perseded will gladly give what ever assistance they can in the work which all realize is for the common good. Dignity vs. Impetuosity It is fair to say that never be fore in the careers of Taft and Roosevelt have their personalities been so forcibly contrasted as in the present campaign. Against the Colonel's hot-headed, rough shod impetuosity is pitted the President's quiet dignity and the American people are choosing be tween the two. At a time when Roosevelt ha3 shown a surprising lack of tact and sober-mindedness, probably no incident has placed him in a more unfavorable light since his inopportune announcement than his unprovoked, personal attack upon President Taft the last of the week. In thus descending to the personal Roosevelt has lowered himself from the position which a retired President should occupy. Contrasted to Roosevelt's un provoked and unbecoming attack upon his former friend is the President's attitude of quiet dig nity which he has maintained throughout the campaign. He has advised his friends every where to avoid personal criticism of any candidate. He does not believe in personalities and does not indulge in them. So far as the President and his friends are concerned it will be a campaign of education, not of villification. If there is any mud-slinging to be indulged in it will not emanate from those who are working for the renomination of President Taft. The Council's Task All who are interested in see ing the much-needed improve ments to the streets and water system made this year are in sym pathy with the efforts being made by the city council to devise ways and means for getting the work under way. The chief ob stacle has been the refusal of the bond companies to accept the bond issues for purchase of the water system and its reconstruc tion, a technical defect having been discovered. After much careful deliberation a proposition is now being considered by the council whereby the delay would be done away with. It is proposed that the charter might be revised increasing the debt limit from $5,000 to $50,000. Warrants could then be issued to the amount of $37,000 for pur chase of the water plant and the work of laying the new mains and later the construction of pavement could be pushed to com pletion. Although the proposition is as yet only under consideration it is no doubt one which will commend itself to all who desire to see the improvements, so long delayed, put through this season. J. C. Mr. Clark puts Mr. Wisliart In a false light when he tries to leave t lie Impressiou that Mr. Wlsharts's sur prise was occasioned by uot knowing of a meeting for the purpose of de ciding on a candidate for the otlice of commissioner from the I'pper Valley having been called. Mr. W'lshart's surprise was occas ioned by having a commit tee call on him and invite him to attend tills meeting, and not because he did not know of such a meeting having been called. Furthermore, the voters who made the announcement that such a meeting would lie held h id first ascertained Mr. Putnam's will Ingness to nl ide by a decision of a majority vote of such a meeting previous to having made the an nountt-ment; then, after having made t lie announcement, tried to Induce Mr. Wisliart to abide by a like de cision.
