DUFUR ORCHARD CO.'S ORCHARD A LARGE ONE One of the largest orchard In the country Is being set out by the I)ufur Orchard Company, near the town of that name in Wasco county. The company has a crew of about 70 men at work, and a one man can set out about loo trie two acres a day, it will be wen that 7.000 tree or 140 ai-res a day I being put Into or chard. The company have been adding to their holding until now they own a tract about nine miles In length and of an average of about five mile In width. HUMANE SOCIETY HAS HAD GOOD INFLUENGE There ha lieen a decided change In the treatment of horse In Hood Klver, according to resident near the Htcvper treet grade, since the formation of the Hood Klver Society for the 1'reveutlon of Cruelty to Aul mal. Thl fact wa brought out at the annual meeting of the Hoclety, which wa held at the room of the Com mercial Clnb on Monday, Iec. 4. Thl, the otllcer and members of the society iH-lleve, I due a much to the moral Influence of the organization a to the cae of cruelty which have been proecuted by the society. K. H. Hartwlg, president of the so ciety, wa warmly commended for the promptness and effectiveness with which he attended to case brought by the society, and he wa reelected for another year. Two points were urged upon mem bersthe prompt payment of the annual daes of one dollar, and an effort to Interest friend In the work of the society. DERAILED TRUCK DOES BIG DAMAGE TO TRACK Fifteen mile of North Bank track, from Mood to Lyle, wa damaged last Thursday night, when a truck on a freight car jumped the rail at Hood and was dragged to Lyle be fore the accident was discovered. Cattle guards, switches ami cross ings were torn out, lish plates were cut and tie smashed for the entire distance, and the only surprising feature of the accident wa that the train was not wrecked atul piled In the ditch.
