The world realizes the value of training In other pro fessions, but It does not seem to know the teacher needs training In the right direction more than any other professional person. With her lie the possibilities of the next gener ation. She has the child under her care during the day for a longer time than the parents; so Is It not vital that she have the right ideals to place before the children? Oregon has recognized this aud the State Normal is now fully started in Its work. That It Is standardized Is proven, for 23 states accept the di ploma issued here. We are also be ginning to see the great benefits of holding a normal diploma. Tlie plea all over the state Is for trained teachers, and If they cannot lie ob talned In our own state of course they come In from other states. The faculty of the normal is com posed of graduates of standard col leges and universities, and are all specialists la their respective fields of work. A great part of the students are experienced teachers, having taught from one to six years. Everyone seems to take hold with a will, and no doubt great things will be accom plished. The spirit of the students is splendid, all are congenial and feel that everything possible Is being done for them. The normal is greatly In need of a dormitory, but. there are plenty of accommodations throughout the town for all. All the students are located in private homes; In some Instances there are as many as four teen In one house. The people of the town are very generous In the matter of giving em ployment to students. There are more places open than there are stu dents to fill so there Is no trouble whatever In getting work to pay for part or all of one's board. A stu dent's I'nin fund Is a dream of the near future and It will be a material help to tiwiny students. The flrls of the normal have Is-en organi.ed Into two literary societies, the Iel Man and the Vespertine. The boys' society Is the Normal. A student's orchestra Is imjw making rapid strides under the direction of Miss Harlan, thi mOstc teacher. A Young Women's Christian Associa tion h;n also Iteen organized with a number of t nthtishistlc young ladles as members. In the near future both a men's t;it club and ft ladles' glee chit) will add much to the music of normal. The firnt social function of the year wns a dancing party given by the Normal Society In the gymnasium. The room was decorated In crimson and grey, the normnl colors. Punch was served during the evening. Ev eryone who altendud reported n most plensant evening and all trust this Is only ttie first of many like pleasant occasions. A No km a i. Ntiuknt.
