Sunday Observance
NoIkhIv obiects to a quiet and
orderly Sunday, particularly dur
ing the morning hours, when
gentle sleep wraps us in its
arms and there is no disturbing
thought of the week day grind.
Setting apart one day in the week
as a day of rest was an inspired
idea indeed, and we will there
fore paraphrase Cadmus in re
gard to books and remark, "God
bless the man who invented Sun
day." Seriously speaking, how
ever, we don't believe harmless
forms of amusement are wicked
on Sunday. Of course, if there
are those who do it is their right
to think so, and to be as solemn
faced about it as possible.
No right thinking person will
decry
churches or church-going.
or the good they do in the world,
and it is also probably true that
weekly religious meditation is
good and wholesome when done
voluntarily. Forced attendance
at church, however, is of doubt
ful value, and constraint in re
ligion as in other things leads to
an outbreak. As the old saying
goes, "stone walls and iron bars
do not a prison make." By the
same token moral suasion is more
efficient than force and likewise
more lasting. Sunday may be
looked forward to with complac
ency as a day of duty, but not as
one of coercion.
State Publicity Work
California is spending $10,000
per county for advertising; Kan
sas spends $20,000 per annum.
Missouri's legislature appropri
ated $25,000, and the money not
being available for the first
year's work, the banks of Kan
sas City and St. Louis, realizing
the importance of the work, sub
scribed the $25,000. Wyoming
has $40,000 per annum to spend
for the next two years; Nebras
ka, which has little to advertise,
is talking $25,000 per annum,
and Iowa is putting on a cam
paign to secure $100,000 per an
num to tell the truth about the
resources of the state and keep
people from leaving it.
With these facts before us, it
would seem that Oregon, with
all the things it has to advertise,
should have a fund which would
enable us to participate in the
enterprises which are increasing
our population and wealth, and
participate in them without pass
ing the hat to individuals and
corporations.
The Opening of Alaska
Those who have the opening
of Alaska at heart, are not en
thusiastic over the tour that Gif
ford Pinchot is making to the
North. They fear that he will
complicate matters, which for a
time promised to be solved when
President Taft sent Secretary
Fisher of the Interior Depart
ment to the territory to look
things over.
The Controller Bay controver
sy, which Pinchot is said to have
ribbed up, and which former
President Roosevelt exploited in
the Outlook, fell fiat. Hence, it
is that Pinchot is said to be go
ing north to look for more
"fuel". He has announced his
intention to make Alaska one of
the big issues before the next
Congress. In the meantime, the
whole Pacific coast is being de
prived oi tne coal to wnicn it is
really entitled.

L. Parsons, husband and wife, to Samuel L. Hay
den, dated January 27th. 1905, filed for record with
the County Clerk of Wasco County, Oregon, on
February 1st. 1906, and recorded by him in Deed
Record No. 39 on page 202;
One deed from Samuel L. Hayden and Harriet
P. Hayden, husband and wife, to A. T. King and
M. L. King, husband and wife, dated March 30th,
1907. filed for record with the County Clerk of
Wasco County. Oregon, and by him recorded in

and Edith O. SteinhofT. plaintiffs in this suit,
dated February 1st, 1908. filed for record with the
County Clerk of Wasco County. Oregon, on Feb
ruary 13th, 190H. and recorded by him in Deed Rec
ord No. 45 on page 310.
On such default of appearance and answer,
Dlaintiffs will also take judgment and decree
against you, and each of you, that those of defend
ants properly chargeable to that duty be directed
and required to make, execute and deliver to these
plaintiffs new deeds of the form and substance of
the said originals, conveying said land according
to such reformed description, within a definitely
named time to be fixed by the court, after the en
try of such decree; and in the event that you, or
either of you fail, neglect or refuse so to do within
the time so fixed by this court, then the judgment
and decree of this court shall stand as such con
veyances, and you and each of you shall be wholly
excluded from any interest in and to said land;
and will take such other and further equitable re
lief as in the judgment of the court these plaintiffs
may have shown themselves entitled, together
with the costs and disbursements of this suit.
You and each of you are hereby served by pub
lication of this summons by virtue of an order on
Hon. W. L. brads haw. Judge of this court, duly
made, granted and dated on this luth day of July,
A. D. 1911. for the service of this mmmons upon
you and each of you by publication thereof and
in accordance therewith; and which order pre
scribed that you and each of you shall appear and

This advertised list of delinquent taxes for the
year 1910 ts in pursuance of an act of the State
Legislature, which is embodied in Chapter 275 of
the
GENERAL LAWS OF THE 1911 SESSION.
The taxes on the following advertised real
property in Hood River County became delinquent
on April 4, 1911. and are subject to a penalty of 10
per cent and interest at the rate of 12 per cent
per annum until they shall have been paid.
Any day after the expiration of atx months
after the taxes charged against the following real

upon demand of any person making application,
to iue to them a certificate of delinquency upon
payment of the taxes, penalty, interest and cost
