LOWNSDALE ORCHARDIST, DEAD Millard Oregon Lownsdale. one of the leading horticulturists of the Pa cific Coast, and formerly owner of the famous Lownsdale orchard near Lafayette. Ore., died Monday after noon at 0 o'clock at his home on Clackamas street, Portland. Mr. Lownsdale had lieen In poor health for more than a year. Last Fall he was obliged to undergo an operation at St. Vincent's Hospital, but his condition did not Improve and his health gradually failed. The veteran orchardlst was well known here through his warlike con tention that Willamette valley fruit was "Just as good" as Hood Fllver's and also through his exhibitions In competition with local fruit The Oregunlan gives a brief history of Mr. Lownsdale's life as follows: Mr. Lownsdale was born in Port land, NovemlMT I'l, lv'il.and was the son of Daniel H. In early manhood he became widely known for his remarkable voice anil appeared many times on the concert stage. After several years of study he wa offered an engagement In grand opera, but did not accept any of the proposals as he would not adapt himself to the restraints of the profession. He returned to Portland ami took up the study of l;iw, but never prac ticed. On the death of his father he Inherited a large fortune and lyenrs ago purchased the tract since known as the Lownsdale orchard. In Vain hill county. Always a student Mr. Lownsdale devoted himself to the study of apple culture. He Is-eame in time a leading authority on the subject, and did more than any other Individual to revive the npple grow ing Industry fn the Willamette Val ley.
