PORTLAND-LOST LAKE ROADJEING BUILT A letter from T. H.Sherrard, forest supervisor, to Mr. I.esll Hutler, gives information about the road the gov ernment Is building through the for est reserve from a point to connect with the road to government camp from Portland. Mr. Sherrard sayn: "I missed you In Hood Kiver last week when I stopped in at th bank to tell you a little more about the road. "The preliminary location, so far as it could be done by hand level work, was completed a week ago, and the transit crew Is now getting the profiles. "The results of the preliminary lo cation were even more encouraging than we expected, for It was found that the road can be put through on a grade not to exceed fi ve per cent, at any point, with many stretches prac tically level. "There are several bridges to be built on this side of the Summit, but no difficulties were found. In fact, we know definitely now from the preliminary location that the route offers a remarkable opportunity for a scenic road across the mountains. "From the conditions found this spring, when the snow is a month later In going off than normal, we believe that road will be open seven months In the year. "We figure th'it with the $l(,0on appropriated by Congress for use thin summer, we can make the fiirvey of the road, put the trail through the 1.') miles and build the road on thin side of the mountains to the Summit, ex clusive of the bridges. "In reply to your question, there will be about three miles of new road necessary from the boundary of the National Forest to the proper junc tion of the new road with the old road to Lost Lake, at the bridge across the west fork of Hood Kiver. Intimating roughly, a good dirt road can Ik1 built here for about $1,0m per mile." Simplicity of L Fontaine. Apropos of the simple, philosophical La Fontnlne I either rend or beard a tooehlup trait of his Blrupllcity. He was wise enough to despise money and spent nil he had from not knowing Its ; value or caring for its production, j When reduced to nothing he lived with a friend who loved him and supplied j ihe very few wants he had. This 1 friend died. One who had known La Fontaine at his house Immediately went to invite htm to come and live with him. He met La Fontulne on the road to his chateau, and upon hearing the invltatiou the poet replied, "J'y nllals" ("I was golpg there"). The nnl- j vete of his reply Is very striking. From Lady Holland's Journal. A Tartar Provarb. ! A Turco-Tartar proverb throws a strong light on the question oi ine amount of veracity to be looked for In official documents by orientals. The proverb runs as follows: "He who spenks the truth will be expelled from nlue villages. Star Orchard Ladders Strong, ) AnU thc n Light , Price I Durable) Is Riht n Blowers Hardware Co.
