Button, of Hood Klver, who Is a
Sanatorium patient, has been divid
ing his time today between drinking
mineral wnter and delivering tive
mlnute talks on the merits of Hood
Klver as an apple-growing section.
Mr. Button not only has the data at
hand, but he also has the apples
Yesterday he received n shipment of
Hood Klver apples, and since their
arrival the patieuts have each been
presented with a sample. Hood
Klver Is therefore a much talked
about place here Just now. Mr. But
ton says he could not afford to let
the opportunity pass of demonstrat
ing the virtues of Hood Klver apples
to tlie two hundred patients, repre
senting more than a dozen states, so
he simply wired for the stock of ap
ples. According to Mr. Button, ap
ples and rheumatism make a good
combination, eseclally when the
patients are all getting better and
the applet) are the liest ever.
Pushing Deschutes Railroads
The new railroads up the Deschutes
river Into Interior Oregon are going
forward at a rapid rate ami are
both practically ready for trains for
u distance of 71 tulles from the month
of the river. The Harriman line ex
pects to reach the S2nd mllepost by
February 1. leaving ."1 miles to le
built to Kedmon 1. It Is expected
this will be accomplished In May.
The Hill road will probably be com
pleted as far as Bend early next summer.

Maud K. Britten were married on
Wednesday evening at the parson
age of the Christian church by Kev.
T. S. Handsaker. The wedding was
a ijuiet one, the only a I tendant being;
Mr. Albert Crocker.
Mrs. Lowery Is a former resident
of Webb City. Missouri, and arrived
here but a short time before the
wedding.

Last Wednesday morning at the
Methodist parsonage occurred the
marriage of Joseph Vnmiler and Nel
lie B. Johnson. Both parties are
well known in Hood lliver, especially
lu the Pine !rove district. Mr. ami
Mrs. V'annier left Wednesday for
Portland where th'-y will visit with
friends for tt few flays after which
they will lie at home to t heir many
friends at the Vunnier residence.

The people of St. Mark's episcopal
church are planning to give an origi
nal and unhide entertainment on the
1 tt h of February next.
The whole affair centers around
the good old custom of buying ami
sending valentines as proposed by
that beloved saint of olden times,
yclept St. Valentine.
Odd Fellows' hall will Ik- trans
formed into the iialnt old village of
Valentine, bringing us back to the
time of (ieorge Washington and his
kind. The village will have Its Inn,
Its bauk, its postolllce, Its many
shops, its village green. Two rival
Valentine Shops will provide hearts
of all sizes ami shapes, m it h all kinds
of sent i merits t hereon, whet her sweet
or not. Ye tieie'ral Shop w III con
tain all sorts of tilings just like
grandmother used to make needle
cases, reticules, thimble holders
everything dow n togranny's pickles.
Besides other Inviting attractions,
the Village (Jreen will be the scene of
much fun a village pump, some
gypsies and strolling players, min
strels, etc.
At "Ye Deer llerte Inne" four land
ladies will dispense it novel luncheon
supper.. St. Valentine's Bank (un
limited ) will change all I'ncle Sam's

will guarantee to deliver every half

Dancing Classes Opened

Collegiates Lose to White Salmon
The Hood Klver Collegiate basket
ball team which crossed elbows with
the White Salmon basket bailers at
the latter burg Saturday came home
defeated, but still In the ring. The
White Salmon boys won by tv score
if 40 to :. The local players were
Kresse, Osgood, Weaver, Skinner
and Mortimer. Brook Hownrth
refereed. The final game will be
played here and It Is expected that
