means should cause an experienced
apple man any loss of sleep.
The dear old A merlean public has

apples during October, November
and December. No one can doubt or
deny this statement, for the shipping
records as well as the statements of
different dealers throughout the
country prove that It Is true.
Now, doesn't It seem reasonable
with all lines of business enjoying a
fair measure of prosperity and with
the same lingering taste In the mouth
of the public for a good eating apple
that during the next five months at
least HO per cent as many apples will
tie sold and used up as were during
the past three months. Isn't that a
reasonable proposftlon?
Isn't It also reasonable that ail the
great Kastern markets with their
tremendous consumptive demands

take care of their holdings, which

get them on our staff quick In a
minute, provided they can show that

community for behavior that would
not pass even In the Ancient and
Honorable Order of Horse Thieves.
Can It be possible that some of
these papers whose Intentions may
tie honest have been misinformed on
the subject when nearly ull of them
claim to spend so much money col
lecting reliable Information? At
least, .that Is what most of them
claim when their solicitors come to
us soliciting ads. Or can It be that
some oT these newspaper men have
been bamboozled into becoming a
tool In the hands of a certain bunch
of dealers who own no apples und
for obvious reasons are trying to
lear the market?
But at any rate. It seems to lie
poor policy to spend money with
some of these newspa'iers of h cer
tain stripe for ads am then have
them turn around and knock your
business, which Is part and pan-el of
the biggest branch of the fruit trade
today.

The result of the matrli, however,
after the first three set-ups, was
never In doubt and the good sized
audience which watched the progress
of the contest expressed its approval

It raised the valuation In Wasco

ment also shows that the valuation
In this county Is greater than that In
Wheeler, Wasco, Sherman, Malheur,
I, 'ike, Lincoln, .losephine, Harney,
lirant. Curry, Crook. Clatsop or
Benton counties. In fact, for Its
area. Hood Klver county, with the
exception of Multnomah, In assessed
valuation, Is the richest county In
the state.
ARMSTRONG SITE
FOR CHAPTER HOUSE
The regular meeting of the Ameri
can Woman's League was held at
the home of Mrs. Flora Hartley Jan
uary 11th. A large and eut huslastlc
crowd of I-aguers were present to
vote on the chapter house site do
nated by Mrs. Leroy Armstrong.
The voti was unanimous In favor
of the lot, and. despite the Inclement
weather, forty votes were polled. A
rising vote of thanks was tendered
Mrs. Armstrong In appreciation of
the gift
Mrs. Klghy received a telegram
from Mr. Ix-wls giving Important In
formation to every member. This
necessitates the calling of a special
all -day meeting In the form of a
Rally Day, w hleh w ill be held at her
home, 704 Oak street, next Thursday,
January l'.lih, from '. a. m. to 1) p. m.
All who desire to help In this work
are requested to bring In any parties
who are In sympathy w ith a desire
to know the league plan, which will
be fully explained to those desiring
to know.
