CITY COUNCIL HOLDS RETIRING SESSION At Its last meeting, which was held Monday evening, the retiring city council passed the ordinance calling a sjteclal election to vote on the question of buying the Hood Kiver water plant, by a unanimous vote. and fixed t lie day for the election for Saturday, January 21. The price nam-d in the ordinance is $:w,900. The polls will lie open on election day from N a. tn. to 7 p. m. The proposition of the Light & Tower Company to defray the expenses of the election was accepted by the council anil It Is Is-lleved that It will have the support of both the old and the new city administrations. Another matter of Inten-st In con lection with the water situation was a motion which was adopted Instructing the city s attorneys to defend the Injunction suit against the city vigorously and to endeavor to bring the matter to a settlement with all possible dispatch, the senti ment of the council ttelng to get It out of the way as a stumbling block to further action tn providing for a new system. A sweeping Improvement was set In motion by the council, which In structed the Judiciary committee to confer with the city engineer for the purpose of grading all streets In the fire limit. Another motion that had the unan imous support of the council was to employ comiwtent accountants to audit the city's books, going back for a period of four years. Ordinances ordering the construc tion of two sewers were passed and also one ordering the grading nnd curbing of Columbia street from 7th to 1:1th street. The report of the re tiring committee on flnnnee was sub mitted nnd accepted. The last meeting of the council which has directed the government of the city's affairs for something over two yenrs and which has been the most strenuous administration In the history of city affairs, was smooth and cordial. George Young and wife returned home from White Salmon Saturday, and will make their home for the present on V. C. Young's ranch. Mrs. Dick Evans' daughter Mamie, and son Forrest, spent the week in The Dalles with her sister. Mrs Vlckers. They returned home Friday. The Modern Woodmen and Koyal Neighbors held a joint Installation Saturday evening. Mrs. Anna Jones who sued for a divorce from her husband C. W. Jones was granted a decree. S. L'waua the Jap was Indicted for forgery, pleaded guilty aud was sen tenced to two years in the peniten tiary. An Indictment wa returned by the grand Jury against A. W. Myers, E. Nelson aud August Wilson charging them with operating slot machines at Cascade Lock. New Aristocrat In Poultry Circles E. F. Patten, the east side poultry fancier, who has an exceedingly fine pen of Rhode Island Ketls, has re- cently purchased a cockerel of this breed of prize-winning stock, from which he anticipates some fine birds. The brother of the new aristocrat In Hood Kiver poultry circles took first prize at the recent poultry show In Portland and his sire won the sweep stakes prize at the Seattle exposi tion.
