In Oregon the election of a Democratic governor and a Re publican legislature is a matter of such frequent occurrence that its sijrnificance is a mere incident in the passing political show. DR. F C. BROSIUS Physician and Surgeon Raaidenco. Oak and Park. Office. Oak 'and Second Olfira houra. 10 to 11 a. m., J to 3 and 7 to X p. m. Ruoma S. 4 and 5, Broaiua Block. Hood River. Ore. The Passing of Roosevelt Disapproval of the policies lately advocated by Theodore Roosevelt in his pre-election speeches was made strongly man ifest on election day, when every state that he spoke in went Democratic. Mr. Roosevelt's attack on the United States Supreme Court, the Constitution of the United States and other time-honored and efficient American institu tions undoubtedly had not a little influence in causing this com plete turnover in what are con sidered Republican states. Add ed to this was his uncalled for criticism of the actions of public men whose integrity had not be fore been questioned, and last, but not least, his overweening ambition for absolute power and dictation in national affairs. After a brilliant career in many public offices, as soldier, statesman and publicist. Mr. Roosevelt represents the pro nounced type of man who didn't know when to quit, and met with disaster and discredit. His reversal of popularity is not a matter of sectional lines, but na tional. It significantly estab lishes the fact that the American people will not countenance a dictator, be he what and whom he may. A study of Mr. Roosevelt's pub lic and private life shows him to be of a destructive rather than of a constructive temperament. He has never been of an upbuild ing nature and has never taken the initiative in advocating any thing constructive except the American navy, which is for de structive purposes. His greatest desire for activity has taken the form of killing something, and a perusal of his book, "African Game Trails," indicates this most decisively, although a strong effort is made to show that the wholesale slaughter of the creatures of forest and jungle was for the benefit of science. It is this spirit, coupled with his ambition to keep in the public eye, and his long continued pop ularity, that led him to go once too often to the mill, and, like that other great fighter, Jeffries, to get a wallop that should dem onstrate to him thoroughly that he can't come back and that his return to public life is a closed incident. The Democratic Victory The Democratic landslide in eastern states is not cause for apprehension in regard to finan cial or industrial conditions. The . element that elected Democrats to control state governments and gave that party a majority in the United States House of Represen tatives consisted of the conserv atives in the Republican body politic of those states. I3elieving that the policies advocated by the Democratic party were safer than those of what may be char acterized as a nameless insur gency, level headed Republicans rallied to the standard of the op posite party and elected the lat ter's candidates. A noticeable fact in the up heaval is that there has been no predicition of financial or indus trial disaster and that it has not caused even a flutter in the money markets of the country. Democratic victory in the east is not one of partisan politics, but one in which Republicans have put a desire for the contin uation of the prosperity of the country before party and the wittuu room t ti Ability of Placing control in, the hands or tne unineu ana ,1()()k,.M. , ,1H n,,,,,,,,,,,.,! h.i radical element and their illy de- i "iippllt"! thin forth' iik- f Kii'f, fined policies. !
