O'Neill, day telegraph opera tor at the depot, who has been away on a vacation, has returned to his duties. C. D. Nickelsen and J. P. Lucas were visitors to the Republican state assembly Thursday and watched the dellleratlons of the delegates. Miss Bessie Henry, of Colorado Springs, who recently bought a ranch In the Willow Flat district, ar rived here last week for another look at her property. . Fred Newby and J. T. Kobertson were In Portland Wednesday and Thursday hobnobbing with the He publican delegates and attending the sessions of the assembly. H. II. Hadlock of the Continental Life Insurance Co., who Is here look ing after the interests of the com pany In his territory, expects to buy a ranch at Hood Kiver. Miss Vera Williams, formerly of Hood Hlver, but whose home Is now at Kugene, Is here the guest of Miss Georgia Prather, a former school mate at the high school. John Ar'iuette's house at Oreetileaf was destroyed by fire Saturday. It was unoccupied and is supposed to have caught from a spark from a locomotive on the North Hank rail road. O. P. Dabney, who returned last week from a tour of the leaches on the coast left the latter part of the week for Seattle where he took steamer for Alaska and will Is ab sent several weeks. C. D. John Franz, clerk at the Hotel Dalles, was here Wednesday visiting friends and taking a look at the country. Will Graham of Portland was here Saturday for a visit w ith relatives, Mrs. Graham Is at the seashore for the summer. Hev. J. L. Hershuer and family are camping on Trout creek at Guler, where they are enjoying a two weeks' outlug. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Simpson, who have been living In Oklahoma, were here Monday to take a peep at the town and valley. Frank Davenport, r., came up from Portland Saturday minus his mustache and had to be Introduced to his old friends. Mrs. J. L. Henderson returned to Portland Saturday after spending several days here. She was accom panied by Mr. Henderson. Hev. Robert K. Brown, pastor of the First Methodist church of Frank lin, Pa., with his wife and little son, visited Hev. aud Mrs. II. J. Wooil last week. A. I. Mason, who Is a member of the executive board of the state grange, went to Portland Saturday to attend a meeting of the board held Saturday night. They were met lu Portland by Mr. Hall. Mr. aud Mrs. W. L. Bradshaw left Friday for Milwaukee, where the former will attend the supreme lodge of the Knights of Pythias as repre sentative for Oregon. They will visit the Yellowstone park on their trip east and will return home about the last of August. A. K. Crosby and family and W. A Johnstou and family of The Dalles made the trip to Cloud Cap Iud last Wednesday, returnlug Thursday, In Mr. Crosby s automobile. I hey re port having a most enjoyable trip. Hayes, pastor of Pine Grove church was lu town Thursday to consult a doctor, as the result of having an accident that wrenched his shoulder and arm. The Injury was caused by Mr. Hayes slipping on a stone on the side of the road which gave way throwing him over the grade. Carl S. Kelty, campaign secretary for A. W. Lafferty of Portland, who is running for the Republican unmln ation for congress, was In The Dalles last week and arranged for nn ad dress to be delivered by Mr. Lafferty In that city. Mr. Kelty was assist ant city editor of the Oregonian for many years. Miss Helen F.aton, daughter of George Katon, who spent the winter here leaving In the spring for her former home In New York state, ar rived from the east Wednesday for a visit with her friend, Miss Mabel Young. Miss Eaton, after a few days here will go on to Grants Pass, where her father Is now living, hav Ing bought property near there. Mrs. R. L. Young, mother of Norm Young, and Mrs. W. S. Young, both sisters of C. A. Bell, proprietor of the Mount Hood hotel are here visiting. The ladles made a long Journey to reach Hood Hlver, having come here from New Brunswick, Canada. H. Brad ley and family, old-time Nebraska neighbors. Mr. Palmer stated that he was much pleased with Oregon scenery and considered It the liest he had seen on his trip. C. K. Gilliert and wife of Hood Hlver, Oregon, who have been spend ing the past. few days In the city visiting friends and relatives, left for Woodburn, Oregon, this morning where they will remain permanently. Mr. Gilbert says that be Is much pleased with the conditions In Doug las county and notices many sub stantial Improvements since his last visit here about four years ago. Roseberg News. . Mrs. C. H. Schmlck went to Port land Friday accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Mlnette Bishop, who Is on her way to her home In Cleveland. Mrs. Bishop, who Is one of the most expert motor car drivers on the coast, had her big Pierce Arrow ma chine shipped to Portland and will take It back to Cleveland. While In California this spring Isi'fore coming to Hood River she ran a twenty mile race with a train near Los Angeles and came off victorious. During the race the sjieedometer showed an average speed of .i0 miles an hour. Her husband Is a member of the wealthy firm of Bishop & Bahcock, manufacturers of soda fountains and supplies and Is reputed to be worth several millions of dollars. S. Shotwell, a well known Willam ette valley orchardlst now located at Creswell, near Lugene, was here Friday for the purpose of study lug Hood River methods. Mr. Shotwell has the management of a l.WH) acre tract at Creswell, owned by the Bournestead Orchard Company com posed of Minneapolis capitalists. W. K. Newell, president of the State Board of Horticulture Is also Inter ested In the project. The company now has CA'l acres planted to or chard and will set the balance as soon as possible. It will lie held un til .five years old and then cut up and sold In ten and twenty acre tracts.
