Republicanism and Oregon The Republican county Assem bly held Saturday demonstrated that representative members of the party were ripe for its re-organization and that although practically acting as a unit it was far from countenancing a return to machine politics. Many of the candidates nominated were un known to the delegates before they assembled in the meeting place and there was an entire ab sence of "slate," bossism or strife of any kind. The candi dates recommended are able, rep resentative and Republicans. A glance over the ticket shows that it is a strong one and one that should appeal to every voter for support. The platform endorsed sets forth the best principles of the Republican party and specifies that the assembly is not opposed to the primary law but organized to aid in the selection of candi dates and in support of personal liberty as guaranteed by the con stitution of the United States. In supporting the Republican candidates and the assembly the people will be following out the principles that have given the country its greatest era of pros perity and made it the greatest nation on earth, notwithstanding the cry of the minority who would tear apart its fabric and give nothing in return. The Republicans of the county and state should loyally stand by their colors and make it possible to place Oregon in the column of progress and influence rather than in that of uncertainty and ridicule. An Example to Mankind As an example of indomitable will power, courage and energy we know of no greater illustra tion than the accomplishment of Oscar Fredenberg, the one-armed mail carrier, who has just com pleted a sixteen year term of faithful service. In all these years this hardy spirit has missed but five trips and four half trips in his duties of carrying the mail for the residents of Mt. Hood, and then only because weather conditions made it impossible. His achievement is one that a man in the full power of his phy sical vigor could be proud of. This Mr. Fredenberg lacks, but complaints from him were un known. Cheerful, confident and always at his post he traversed the dreary miles of his mail route in winter and summer, in sun shine and rain and only ended his term of service when no longer needed. Mr. Fredenberg has performed a service for his fellow men and women that is deserving of great credit. Also an example to his fellow creatures of sound body that should cause them to become dumb when tempted to complain of life's hardships. Forest Fires Carelessness is the cause of nin e-tenths of the forest fires and those having occasion to be in the timber this time of year will do well to guard against an act that may cost timber owners many thousands of dollars, The Western Forestry and Conservation Association, which embraces the states of Oregon, California, Washington, Mon tana and Idaho, is carrying on a campaign to save the forests from the usual fire losses that oc cur each summer. This organi zation represents thirteen minor associations. Printed matter, fire warnings and circulars are being sent out to timber owners, mill men, farmers and others directly concerned. Theti the house refused to recede from the congress ional plan to repeal section U of the new reclamation act thus taking from Oregon the benefit of all the millions contributed by this state to the reclamation fund and the Ore gou senatorial delegation disclaims all responsibility for the action either of the house or the senate. In the one case It was the great activity and diligence of Hawley that got the $.'!0,0oo locks appropriation through congress, and the senators say they did It all. In the other case, It was largely the activity and Influence of Senator Borah that got the recla mation act in Its present objection able form through cougress. The Oregon senators say they wouldn't do anything, and Ellis who is not a meiiilier of the senate is to blame. Seuator l'.orah got what he and Idaho wanted by mighty persistence largely at the expense of Oregon. He did it mainly by threat of ludefiulte filibuster. The Oregou senators stood dumb aud helpless at the spec tacle. Where was the eloquent voice of the pulssaut Bourne aud the skill ful finesse of the smooth Chamber lain? Nowhere certainly not pres ent then and there. A determined stand a little filibuster, say might and undoubtedly would have brought results for Oregon; but It was not undertaken. It Is unfortunate for Oregou that great questions are not discussed and settled on the golf links where the state has more than adequate representation. The Passing; of "Busting" The state of Wyoming that west ern commonwealth vehemently pro testing against the epithet of "wild and woolly" attached to it by the average eastener, the while proudly boasting of the state's advanced civ ilization has at last discovered the beam lu Its own eye and hag taken steps toward Its early removal. It has decreed that the practice of "bustlug" steers for amusement pur poses must be stopped. The practice of "busting" was con fined to the earlier history of cattle raising In the range states before more humane methods were discov ered and consists In a lasso being thrown over the animal's head, the horseman then deftly circling the steer and tripping it up with the rope. The plunging animal usually lands squarely on Its back not In frequently, however, sustaining a broken leg, or horn, and occasionally a broken neck, as a result of the vio lent fall. It Is n brutal practice' long ago discarded by practical cattlemen aud prohibited by legislative enact ment In every other western range state save Wyoming. From this time forward those who desire to witness an exhibition of this revolt lug form of amusement will have to Journey across the line Into Mexico. Frank Harding, in August Pacific Mjnthly. Swackhanner Fakir One Swackhanner, a pack ou his back, a bible In bis hand, and all the assurauce of a smart nigger, cllmU-d the stairway to White Salmon on Saturday. He purported to be a lec turer, but was a fakir, who did time on the city rock pile In Spokane, where he Insisted ou leading tne young people's societies. He had the nerve to try to get the M. F. church, but It was, of course, refused him. Two Firemen Laid Out Overcome by the heat of Sunday a fireman on a North Bank passen ger train dropped In his cab at Cliffs and was put off at Bingen for medi cal attendance. On a following train he was taken to Vancouver and is recovering. Near Ash another tire man ka-t his life. In some mysteri ous way he wa swept off or fell from the englue, the euglneer not discovering that the fireman was missing until he had gone seven miles. Backing up the train he was found near the bridge dead. Start White Salmon Electric Road With eight men Mr. Sawyer of the Northwestern Engineers of Portland arrived lu White Salmon Monday morning, and picking up a few more men in the town, started two crews at work, one checking up the White Salmon end of the Hue; the other going to Camas Prairie end of the line. as proposeu, tue line goes through White Salmon on Lincoln aveuue, circles the butte to Cook's addition, then hits the Snowden road for the upper end of the loop at Camas. Farther than the survey the Enterprise cannot speak, but those who have subscrlled stock say they have had so many favorable assurances about the earning power of the road that work will follow the survey as soon as possible. A Weather Tale The weather man ran the steam roller over the country on Sunday. It registered '.. In the shade. Not a whiff of air ruffled the trees. It raided the snow line on Mount Hood. It Is said that the river was blistered, and at Pasco It was so hot that Sunday was expanded into Monday, while at The Dalles the people gasped and forgot all about the pennant, aud at Hood Klver the tongues In the cow bells swelled up and not a sound was heard. The heat came down through the skylight In the Enter prise office and fired the brain of the "devil", nnd there is no telling what may have gotten Into this issue. White Salmon generally gets oue hot period of two or three days In the summer, when the wind shifts out of the west to the east, ami then It Is all over. On Tuesday the wind got back to the west, whence come the cool breeze's. Farmers Knock Out Saloon There was a time when the settlers In the west would unite against Indians, their common enemy, and wage defensive warfare. The farmers have again united against a subtle foe, but this time booze was tackled Instead of the Indian, and booze, by the way, has claimed more victims than Indians. A few weeks ago fruit growers on both sides of the White Salmon united In an effort to dis lodge the saloon at I'nderwood. The method of procedure was to get a list of names of a majority of the people ou the Skamania side of the river, to which they added the petltlou of the signers ou the east side of the river. This they preseuted to the commissioners of Skamania county, who Informed them that un less the saloon keeper could get a majority of names the license would not be renewed. This be caunot do and the ranchers come off victorious. Killed 350 Pound Bear A large brown bear weighing about !550 pounds, w as killed by Ueo. E. Carter last week three miles up the White Salmon river. Carter was picking blacktterrles when the bear made its appearance. Going to a nearby cabin Carter produced a gun aud went after the bear, coming up on him as he was preparing to make uu attack.
