We are a little sur prised ut thin an we understood thin learned desclplc of Kseulaplus re ported that the cold weather last winter put every mother's won of a collon bacilli out of business. Tin press of the Htate will no doubt take pleuHiire In alluding to l)r. Edging ton's ail vice. Furthermore, visitors to the rune festival who may mop off at Hood Itiver will lx? duly thankful for the tip and hurry awny. There's nothing like looking on life through blue goggles and adopting the slo giiu, ''Cheer up the worst is yet to come." Of courm; those who have acquired a taste for boiled water must have It the same us they would llmburger cheese, cuvlure and pigs feet. Others, however, whose tastes are not quite so epicurean will con tent themselves with water direct from the tap. No doubt the good housewives of Hood Klver will be tickled to death to comply with Pro fessor Kdglngton's manifesto as It will give them something to do In the long hours of the summer after noon, when they can keep the tea kettles sizzling and the temperature of the kitchen like a furnace In order that their liege lords und the chil dren can delightedly sip their boiled water, and rejoice at their Immunity from the dreaded cjlon bacilli bug boo. In order to assist the long suf fering we would suggest the purchase of a tireless cooker. This could be placed la the parlor where It would be handy for visitors. E. L. Smith for Governor Four years ago Hon. E. L. Smith of Hood Illver was importuned and petitioned by thousands of people to allow his name to be used as a can didate for governor, but he absolute ly refused to eutertulu the proposi tion. He was also as strenuously beseached to run for congress, but refused those entreaties also. He could have been easily elected to either office he chose, but he persisted that he would consider no nomina tion save for senator, and It will be remembered that he was defeated for that nomination, mainly for the rea son that he was sick In bed all through the canvass. It Is now publicly said that Mr. Smith will consent to have his name brought before the coming republi can assembly for the nomination, and we hope this Is true though we doubt It. Mr. Smith would make an ideal governor, and tinder the direction of his estimable wife we would ngaiu have an executive mansion at the cnpttol something like the days of the Incumlency of Governor Moody, who, It Is said, came nearer lielng the Ideal executive host and Mrs. Moody the perfect hostess, than any ofticlals we have ever sent to Salem. Four years ago Mrs. Smith told the writer that she would not con sent to h;ive Mr. Smith run for the office t teen use they were not wealthy enough to entertain in the style which she thought the executive should maintain, and she cited Gov ernor Moody's Incumbency ns setting the high water mark, a mark which she would like to emulate If they had the means and Mr. Smith were for tunate enough to be elected. Hut perhaps Mr. Smith's bank ac count has so grown since then that Mrs. Smith has lieen shown by E. L. that he could go the Moody pace, and she has consented to have him become a candidate. We hope this Is true. The Dalles Optimist. 41: -' " - J A V . - ,.'.( 4 V . "i - -: . i A- It ' WW 3 . ' r. Attorney S. W.
