He attracted attention ;!() year ago with hi success In raising fruit with out Irrigation. Mr. Watson has a fruit, ranch near Willows, three mile north of Long I loach, which Is never Irrigated nor watered, and 1 the wonder of horticulturist. Mr. Watson and his son, W. p. Watsou, Jr., own large tract of land near Cochella on which they are successfully raising cantaloupes, or ange ami vegetable without Irri gation. William Penn Watson was one of Hood Itlver' earliest pioneer resi dents and came here about 40 years ago. He received a large grant of land on which now stands part of the city of Hood Klver, but disposed of It. Contemporary with Captain H. C. Coe he was one of the first to recog nize Hood Kiver'e superior soil and climate for growing apple and planted a small orchard. Mr. Watson left Hood Klver In 1900. Besides hi daughter, who re side at Long 15each, he I survived by Mr. Nellie Walker and John W. Watson of Portland. Cutler have purchased White gas car, the new machine recently put out by the White Steamer Company. Including the one P. S. Davidson recently purchased three of this make of car are now In the valley, Mr. I'slie Butler's new Cadillac also arrived thl week. There are now something over forty In the valley. Cigar Company Doing Business The Hood Kiver Cigar Company opened It place of business last week and is manufacturing cigars for the Hood Kiver trade. It ha secured quarters In the Jackson building aud is putting out several brand of first class five and ten cent cigars. The ten cent brand I the Commercial Club and the five cent brand are the Itaukable and Hood Klver Five. The material used lu all of the stock I said t,o Ih long hnvana filler with Sumtra wrappers.
