THE HOOD RIVER NEWS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1910 5 The Lure of the Mask By HAROLD MACGRATH Cspyrijhl. I90S. by In Babbs Merrill C. (CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK) , CHAPTER Xlt ORAY VIII.S THE fascluatloo of Montt Carlo la uot to be described It mutt be aeuu. Vice itiall be attrac tive, nays the mother of Satan. At Monte Carlo It Is more than at tractive; it is compelling. A aubtle hypnotism prevails, tlio lure of gold. Fool and rogue, saint and sinner, here they meet and mingle and change. To those who give Munte Carlo but a trifling glance, toss a coin or tiro on the tables aud leave by the morrow's train It has no real significance. It Is simply oue of the sights of Europe. To this latter class belonged the two young men. They hud no fortunes to retrieve, no dishonesty to hide, no res titutions to make, no dancers to clothe and bouse. It was but mild flirtation. They bud searched Nice and Monaco and Mentone. but the women they sought were not to be found. They decided, therefore, that the women had gone1 on to Paris. "My system needs a tonic," aald Merrlhew. "We'll hold the funeral after to night's play. Of all the damfool games It's roulette." "And I can prove It," Merrlhew re plied. "I have Just $30 left." II took out the gold aud toyed with It "Can't you hear It?" he asked, "near what?" "The swan song of these tender na poleous." Merrlhew had played the numbers. the dozen, the columns, the colors, odd and even. Some'tlmes he would win a little, but a moment later the re lentless rake would 3 rag It back to the bank. "Nature has done thia very prettily. Quite clever with her colors, don't you know," he drawled, plucking the down on his upper Up, for he was trying to raise a mustache, convinced that two waxed points of hair at each eoruer of LN mouth would Impress the hotel waiters aud other faccblni baseborn. "I)on't be a Jackass!" Hillxrd was out of sorts. "You agreed with me thut I was one. Why not let me make a finished prod uct?" good bumoredly. "Well," Merrlhew tlnully said, "you might as well let me have my letter of credit now." "You will not set eyes upon It till we return to Genoa. That's final. I know you, my boy, and I know Monte Carlo. Even with your fifty, a watch and a ring I'm afraid to trust you out of sight." "I can see that you will never for give nor forget those bad cigars. A picture, beautiful, but faUe. friend. lie's a lmd loser. I have seen him lose his temiicr too. It'a my opin ion that he's a desperate man." "They usually nre when they come to Monte Carlo." So they walked round to the en trance to the gaming halls, where the lights, the gowns, the Jewels, the spar kling eyes, the natural beauty and the beauty of eimuiel. the vague perfumes, the low murmur of voices, the soft rustle of silks, the music of ringing gold, all combine to produce a picture as beautiful ns a mirage and as false. They Joined the never ending proces sion which 'passes in and out of the swinging doors day after day, year after year. "There's the chap with the scar. He is a baudsome beggar." Illllard admit ted. "I wonder what sort of blackleg be is. He's no ordinary one, I'm cer tain. I begin to recognize the face of the mun with him. He's a distinguish ed diplomat." The ltullun played like an old band, a number once in awhile, but making It a Klut to stake on the colors. lied began to reat Itself. He doubled and doubled. On the sixth consecu tive turn he played the maximum of 12.000 francs and won. The diplomat touched him on the arm significantly, but the player shook his head. Ten minutes later be bad won 40,000 francs. Again he refused to leave bis chair. "If be stays now," said Illllard, "he will lose It all. His friend Is right" "Forty thousand francs, $3,000!" murmured Merrlhew sadly. Why couldn't he have luck like this? Illllard wos a true prophet There came a change In the smile of fortune. The game Jumped from color to color, seldom repeating, with zero making Itself conspicuous. The man with the car played on, but he began to lose mail sums at first, then larger till finally he was down to bis original take. The soar grew livid. He waited five turns of the wheel, then placed bis stake on the second dozen. He lost. He rose from his chnlr scowling Ills eye chanced to meet Illllard's, and their glances held for moment. "Fool I" said Merrlhew In an under tone as the man strolled leisurely past them. "Fight thousand and not con tent to quit!" Meanwhile the trolleys from Nice and Mentone had poured into Monte Carlo their usual burdens of pleasure seekers. On one of the cars from Nice there had arrived two women, both veiled and simply gowned. They sel dom addressed each other and never spoke to any one else. Doubtless they were some sober married women out for a lark, t'pon leaving the car they did not at once go Into the casino, but directed their steps toward the ter races, fur the band was playing. They sat In the shadow of the statue of Mas senet, and near by the rasp of a crick et broke In upon the music. When the music stopped they linked arms and sauntered up and down the wide weep of stone, mutually Interested In the crowds. Once as they passed be hind a tHMich the better to view the palaces of the prince they heard the voices of two men. As they went on the women heard something nlmut "those bad cigars." The men were Americans evidently. It was only an Inconsequent Incident, and n moment later both had forgot ten It. "At which table shall I make the stake. Kitty?" "The center. There Is always a crush there, and wo shall not be no ticed." "I do not scree with you there. How ever, It shall be the rcntv tsJile. What would you do, Kitty. If I should break the lunik?" "Die of excitement!" truthfully. "You will live through this event then." With a light, cureless laugh La glgnorina pressed her way to the table. She lost steadily from the start. She gave no sign, however, that her forcea were In full retreat from the enemy. She played on, and the band which placed the beta waa steady. And when the gold was all gone she opened ber empty bands expressively and shrugged. She waa beaten. Behind the chair of the banker, oppo site, stood the Italian. The scowl still marred his forehead. When the wo man In the veil spread out ber banda he started. There was something fa miliar In that gesture. And then the woman saw him. For the briefest mo ment her form stiffened. "Kitty," La Blgnorlna whispered, 'let us go out to the atrium. 1 am tired." They left the ball leisurely and found a vacant settle In the atrium. "How cold your hands are!" ex claimed Kitty. "Kitty. I am a fool, a fool! I have unwittingly put my head In the lion's mouth. If I bad not reached this seat In time I should have fallen. I would willingly give all my rings if at thia moment I could run across the ball and out Into the open!" "Merciful heaven! Why. what la the matter? What baa happened?" "I cannot explain to you." "Was It some one you saw In there?" "Silence, and It perfectly till!" A man In evening dreas came oat Into the atrium, lighting a cigarette. At the sight of hjm both women were startled. "It Is Mr. Illllard. Mr. Merrlhew. friend!" Kitty would have risen, but the other's strong band restrained her. "Kitty, remember your promise." "Is he the man?" "No. no! Only I have said that we must uot meet him. It might do blm Incalculable barm. Harm!" La Bl gnorlna repeated. "Do you under stand?" Illllard blew outward a few pal rings of smoke and circled the atrium with an Indolent glance which stopped a It rested upon the two veiled wo men. A certain curiosity Impelled blm toward them, and be sank on the aett with perhaps half a dozen spans of the band between. He observed the wo men frankly. Not a single wblsp of hair escaped the veils, not a line of any feature could be traced, and yet the tint of flesh shone dimly behind the silken bands of crape. He nodded. The veils did not move. "Fortune favors the brave, but rare ly the foolish." There was no response, but the small shoe of the woman nearest be gan to beat the floor ever so lightly. Illllard was chagrined. Thereupon be bowed and sought an other seat. The women hurried to the lobby. He would have given them no further thought bad not the Italian with the scar appeared, eyed the re treating figures doubtfully and then started after tbem. That he did not know them Illllard was reasonably certain. He assumed that the Italian saw possible flirtation. He rose quickly and followed. The four departed from the casino and crossed toward the Hotel de Tarls, the women In the lead. As yet they had not observed that they were being followed. The car stops at this turn. As the women came to a stand one of tbem saw the approaching men. In stantly she fled up the street The ether hesitated, then pursued ber com panion. Whatever doubts the Italian "A Uidyt Grace of Mary, that U droUl" might have crtertalned, this flight dis sipated then. He knew row he knew! With a sharp cry of tnllVUm he broke Into a run. So did Illllard. Peo ple turned and stared, but none sought to Intercept any of the runners. In Monte Carlo there are many strange scenes, and the knight errant often finds that his bump of caution has suddenly developed. And there were no police about; they wer m the ca sino terraces or strolling tlir9yn the gardens. Fas the'park the quartet ran Then came a stretch of darkness between one electric lamp and another. And then, as If whisked away by magic, the foremost woman disappeared. The other halted, breathless. She started again, but too late. The Italian caught her roughly and quickly tore aside the veil. "Kitty Kllllgrew!" Illllard cried. He (prang forward ani grasped the Italian by the shoulders The Italian truck out savagely, but Illllard seized bis arm. Kach man could hear ths breathing of the other, quick and deep. "You meddling dog!" gosped Illllard. "Tuke care lest the dog bite, algnor. Release my arm and stand aside!" "l'reeiitly. Now. that way la yours," said Illllard, pointing. "Are you certain?" the Italian blaaed. "So certain that If you do not obey me I shall call the police." "I should like nothing better," re plied the Italian, with a coolness which dumfouuded Illllard. "Do you know these ladles?" "Do you?" Insolently. "My knowing them does not mat ter. But It Is any gentleman's con cern when a man gives pursuit to a lady who does not wish to meet him.'' "A lady? Grace of Mary, that Is droll!" Illllard released the imprisoned arm. There waa a patent raillery, a quizzical Insolence which convinced Illllard that the Italian had not given chase out of an Idle purpose. "We shall meet again," the Italian aid softly. "I hope not," replied Hlllard frankly. "However, you may find me at the Hotel de Londres." The Italian laughed again. "You un derstand the language well," debatlag- iy. "And the people too." Hlllard bad no desire to pass the time of day with bis opponent. "Well. I have said that we shall meet again, and It must be so." "And your bat, as well as mine, is still in the casino. The night la cold." The Italian permitted his glance to wander over Hlllard critically. He wung round on bis heel and walked rapidly down the street. Hlllard turned to reassure Kitty.
