BRIEFS Community course covers local trees, forest ecosystems TILLAMOOK – Learn to iden- tify the trees of Tillamook County, as well as how they interact with one another and the greater land- scape, at Tillamook Bay Commu- nity College on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. This community education course will cover regional ecol- ogy, tree identifi cation and the Oregon Forest Practices Act. Consisting of two classroom ses- sions, the course will wrap up with an evening fi eld trip to a local forest. Tuition for the course is $35. Attendees must register by Thurs- day. Fat Bike Festival returns to Cannon Beach CANNON BEACH – The annual Cannon Beach Fat Bike Festival will return to the North Coast with recreational events spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Celebrating the opportu- nity to explore the coast through off -road biking, the festival will begin at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, where participants can meet up for a sunset ride to Haystack Rock at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, bicyclists are invited to meet at the chamber for a 13 mile guided tour to Hug Point, exploring the historic Ore- gon Beach Highway, beginning at 9:30 a.m. In the afternoon, Scavenger Hunt passports will be available, allowing visitors to win prizes for visiting locations around the community. In the evening, enjoy a sunset beach bonfi re at Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site, accom- panied by short bike races, games and selections from local breweries. To wrap up the weekend, bicyclists are encouraged to explore the Klootchy Creek Trails, featuring routes appropri- ate for all biking skill levels. Tickets for the weekend event are $40. A festival waiver is required, and the festival will follow current COVID guide- lines. For more information, visit www.cannonbeach.org. Annual student art show opens at college ASTORIA – Clatsop Com- munity College will present an annual juried showcase of stu- dent art in the Royal Nebeker Gallery, opening with a reception on Thursday at 6 p.m. Featured juror and local art- ist Paul Polson will give a talk at the reception, where awards for student art will be announced. The collection, which features artwork created in classes across a variety of mediums, will be on display through June 10. The reception and gallery exhibit are free and open to the public. Dahlgren named conductor of North Coast Symphonic Band ASTORIA — Terry Dahl- gren has been appointed as permanent conductor for t he North Coast Symphonic Band in its 2022-23 performing season. Dahlgren, a retired music educator, will become the band’s sixth permanent con- ductor . He began serving as a guest conductor for the band in 2005, developing a last- ing relationship with longtime musicians. For nearly two decades, Dahlgren directed band pro- grams at the Seaside School District, leading multiple courses and student groups, including the Seaside High School Symphonic Band.
