A5 THE ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2021 SPORTS OBITUARIES HOMETOWN REPORT Robert ‘Bob’ Marks By GARY HENLEY The Astorian Former Seaside runner Bradley Rzewnicki, now competing for the Univer- sity of Arizona, fi nished 64th overall out of 194 runners in the UC Riverside Invita- tional, held Saturday in Riv- erside, California. Rzewnicki covered the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 22.7 seconds, help- ing the Wildcats to a seventh place team fi nish out of 25 scoring schools. Cal Baptist University won the team title with 56 points. Rzewnicki was Arizona’s third runner, behind team- mates Shem Kemboi (24th) and Timothy Kibet (44th). Rzewnicki’s personal best in the 8,000 is 24:50, set in his sophomore season at Gonzaga in 2019. Following his junior year at Gonzaga, Rzewnicki transferred to Ari- zona, where he is listed as a sophomore for the Wildcats. Safety fi rst Clatsop County is appar- ently a strong producer of safeties on the football fi eld. A pair of former Seaside Gulls are safeties for their respective schools at the col- legiate level, while Astoria’s most well-known safety is off to a good start in his ninth NFL season. Jordan Poyer, the 2009 Astoria High School gradu- ate in his fi fth year with the Buff alo Bills, has nine tackles in two games with the Bills, coming off a 35-0 win last week at Miami. Meanwhile, Seaside grad- uate Alexander Teubner is a sophomore safety for the Robert Glenn Brott Aedyn Cook, Pacifi c Henry Samuelson, George Fox Boise State University foot- ball team. A second string for the Broncos, Teubner has one tackle in two games for Boise State. Former Gull Aedyn Cook is a freshman safety for the Pacifi c University football team. Astoria held leads in all three sets, including the fi rst, when the Fishermen rallied from a 14-10 defi cit to grab a 16-15 lead behind a serv- ing run from Landri Mickle. An ace by Mickle increased the lead to 18-15, but the Braves rallied with a 9-2 run before closing for the win. Several ace serves from freshman Maddie Wilken helped give the Lady Fish a 21-20 lead in the third set, but a kill by Alex Saunders capped three straight points for the Braves, who held on for the sweep. In other Cowapa action Tuesday, Valley Catholic defeated Seaside in three sets, 25-14, 25-10, 25-10. on the season with a 2-0 win over Seaside in nonleague action. The Columbians won the fourth set to force a one- game-to-15 tie-breaker, and the Warriors answered the call, building a quick 4-1 lead.
