Fultano’s Pizza is known for its crunchy cornmeal crust, fresh toppings and specialty pies, such as the Teriyaki Chicken with pineapple or Popeye’s Special, loaded with spinach, mushrooms, onions, garlic, feta and sun- dried tomatoes. You can also get a variety of pub staples, including chicken wings, sub sandwiches and burgers. For your morning — or afternoon — jolt, visit By the Way, a combination cof- fee bar and gift shop downtown, or Mac’s Micro-Market, which opened in June in the building that housed the beloved Pacifi c Way Bakery and Café for more than three decades before it closed this spring. Under the same ownership as the previ- ous business, Mac’s Micro-Market is a bodega-style establishment offering sand- wiches, baked goods, and coffee drinks, along with groceries, fresh produce and wine. Places to stay Besides its numerous short-term vaca- tion rentals, Gearhart has a couple lodg- ing options close to the charming down- town corridor. One is the Gearhart Ocean Inn, a boutique property on North Cot- tage Avenue that offers studio, one- and two-bedroom New England-style cottages to accommodate solo travelers and fami- lies alike. The historic inn is within walk- ing distance of the shops and dining estab- lishments on Pacifi c Way. Another lodging option with his- toric fl air is the Gearhart Hotel, oper- ated by McMenamins on the third fl oor of the cedar-shingled, Cape Cod-style Kelly House on North Marion Avenue. It is the fourth hotel since the late 19th century to carry the town’s name and a connection to the nearby Gearhart Golf Links, which evolved from an informal course created in 1892. While staying at the hotel, you can enjoy libations and delicious comfort food at the Sand Trap Pub on the fi rst fl oor. The basement of the property now houses the Pot Bunker Bar, the Livingstone’s Room, the golf clubhouse, and space for meetings and events. You can also rent ocean-view and beachfront condominiums from Gear- hart by the Sea. For a more low-key lodging option, consider setting up camp at Bud’s RV and Campgrounds along U.S. Highway 101. The site includes several facilities and amenities, including a small grocery store, restrooms and showers and laundry facilities. Morgan Grindy Sand Trap Pub is connected to McMenamins Gearhart Hotel. Evening activity: Dinner at McMenamins BY MORGAN GRINDY After a day exploring the town, unwind with dinner and drinks at the Sand Trap Pub. The pub is part of the McMenamins Gearhart Hotel that overlooks the Gearhart Golf Links golf course. Both indoor and outdoor seating provide an unobstructed view of the golf course that was built in 1888, making it the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River. Choose from a wide selection of ale, wine and cider, including some wine options from McMenamins Edgefi eld Winery. The dinner menu ranges from the Expedition Elk Burger, to the L ocal Gyro, to the Brewer’s Crab Fon- due Pot. Their burgers, sandwiches and “Pub Grub” all have local ingredients. Try the steamer clams, Alehouse Halibut Fish and Chips or the Pot Bunker Crab Mac and Cheese to get a real taste of the coast. Their menu of salads is a fresh, light option for dinner. The Brewer’s Salad incorporates Ruby-red raspberry vinaigrette with hazelnuts and blue cheese crumbles for a Northwestern-inspired dish. Try the Six Arms Goddess Salad if you’re looking for something Greek-inspired.
