With most of the city in landslide zones, city staff is recommending geotechnical reports for certain activ ities on medium- to high-risk hillsides to limit legal liability The city’s Community Development Department is hosting a virtual open house to help residents under stand landslide risks and offer an opportunity for feed back on how the ordinance can balance risk and prop erty rights. Photos by Hailey Hoffman /The Astorian Harbor porpoise calf found in Gearhart GEARHART — The parents of Portland resident Andie Robert son photographed a harbor porpoise at the beach in Gearhart on Saturday. Tiffany Boothe, of the Seaside Aquarium, identified the calf. “Harbor porpoises are our most common cetacean and their calving season is June through August so it is not uncommon this time of year,” Boothe said. “We usually respond to a half dozen or so each sea son. This was a newborn calf with its umbilical cord still attached.” Boothe recovered the calf Saturday and it will be taken to Portland State University for a necropsy. — BLACK yLIVESt MATTER The Astorian Gray whale necropsy performed in Ocean Park 1 V LONG BEACH, Wash. — The peninsula’s second deceased gray whale in May came ashore south of the Ocean Park beach approach and has been necropsied by researchers. It isn’t uncommon for grays belonging to the abun dant Eastern Pacific population to die of various nat ural causes, with a few being washed onshore rather than sinking.
