Thanks, Mom Coast Weekend contest celebrates mothers BY ALYSSA EVANS I n April, Coast Weekend asked readers to submit original art pieces in honor of Mother’s Day for the second Lockdown Lowdown contest. The contest received submissions from 10 resi- dents who live in either Oregon or Washington state. Each entry shows a unique take on Mother’s Day, which is why all of the entries are featured this week. Some entries feature photos of mothers, while oth- ers are of meaningful possessions. Creations include paintings, sketches, poetry and embroidery. Jan Bono, of Ocean Park, Washington, won fi rst, Dayle Olson, of Cathlamet, Washington, won sec- ond place and Nichole Lopez, of Astoria, won third place, by receiving the most votes for their submis- sions. They will be receiving gift certifi cates good for either Buoy Beer Co. in Astoria or The Depot Restau- rant in Seaview. The gift cards are funded by a grant through Northwest Oregon Works and Oregon Coast Today. Bono submitted an original poem titled “Mar- iner Mom” in honor of her mother, who loved attend- ing Seattle Mariners games. “As soon as I started reading your column this week, I was struck by an immediate image of my mother and I together Safeco Field watching the Mar- iners play on nearly a dozen Mother’s Days,” Bono said. “In fact, when she passed, I arranged for her to be buried on the Home Season Opener, as an extra reminiscence.” Olson submitted an original painting of a mother with the phrase, “Mothers put us on the path to who we become.” “My mom has always encouraged and nurtured my creative pursuits and believes that whatever I dream is possible,” Olson said. She’d always root for the Mariners Knew every player by name Could tell by the stats she quoted She watched every televised game. But she loved ‘her boys’ the most Rooting there among the crowd, And when one of them hit a homer Mom was banner-waving proud. She ate her way ‘round the concourse At Safeco’s ‘Level Two’ She must have had a hollow leg For burgers, pizza, and peanuts too. Every Mother’s Day in person She yelled and clapped her hands Cause her boys always played their best When MOM was in the stands!
