Pior was named Wrestler of the Meet in the lighter weights. Seaside’s Aidan Tice (most outstanding wrestler in the upper weights) won four matches to win the championship at 152, where Tice had a 51-second pin against Raymond’s Oscar Juarez, a 17-2 technical fall over Clatskanie’s Mike Hinsz, another quick pin (59 seconds) over Wahkia- kum’s Braxton Jones, then a hard-earned pin (3:23) over Ilwaco’s Keegan Kemmer in the ﬁ nal. Back came the Warriors with a title at 160, where sophomore Alex Tapia had a bye, a 32-second pin over Seaside’s Skyler Hazen, a 2-1 decision in the semiﬁ - nals over Ilwaco’s Aidan Auttelet, then a 9-7 victory over Seaside’s Everett Roll- ins in the title bout, capping Tapia’s ﬁ rst matches of the season. Warrenton sophomore Josh Niehuser didn’t get a title, but he did add team points at 170 by advancing to the ﬁ nal, only to lose by fall (39 seconds) to Clats- kanie’s Trent Berntsen. Trevor Hutson of Ilwaco won by fall (5:44) over Knappa’s Kaleb Roe in the ﬁ nal at 182. Junior Sam Irwin scored Warrenton’s sixth and ﬁ nal championship at 195, where Irwin scored two straight pins (in a total of 87 sec- onds), won by injury default in the semiﬁ nals, then won with a 3:44 fall over Ray- mond’s Chase Flynn in the ﬁ nal, for Irwin’s sec- ond tournament win of the season. A 4A state title con- tender, Seaside’s Luke Nel- son pinned Cayden Men- dez in 1:11 in the ﬁ nal at 220, and Astoria picked up its lone championship out of a four-wrestler bracket at 285, where Skylar Smith scored a fall (3:15) over Ilwaco’s Michael Rodda in the ﬁ nal. “We enjoyed the night, but need to get right back to it,” Conant said. “We are still very early in the sea- son, and this will feel like a distant memory by the end of the year.” Warrenton competes in dual meets with Astoria, Knappa, Mark Morris and Tillamook’s second team in a four-way meet Wednes- day at Astoria. Lady Warriors place second One day earlier, Warren- ton hosted a girls invita- tional, where the Warriors ﬁ nished second behind For- est Grove. Warrenton’s Jade Voll- ner, Isabella Carr and Mar- lie Annat all won their groups, while teammates Stevey Berry and Alejandra Nestor took second. “We want to keep build- ing this tournament every year,” Conant said. “There needs to be a competi- tive girls tournament on the North Coast, and we are working towards being that.” The tournament had 50 wrestlers, “which is more than last year, and we want more than that next year,” Conant said. Ten schools took part in Friday’s meet, while the Lady Warriors will travel to Liberty High School for an upcoming invitational. BOYS BASKETBALL Scappoose edges Astoria in OT, 62-56 ermen, now playing at the class 5A level, overcame a rough fourth quarter then won a free throw shooting contest in the overtime ses- sion to escape with the win. Scappoose was 7-for- 12 in the ﬁ nal period, while Astoria lost Ryan Stenblom and Michael Moore to fouls in the ﬁ nal two minutes. The Indians had three players in double ﬁ gures, led by Kyle Negelspach with 18, Jake Boyle with 16 and Luke McNabb with 11. Astoria’s Xander Marincovich led all scor- ers with 21, while Dylan Junes chipped in 14 for the Fishermen. Astoria opens play Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. against Monte- sano in the annual Seaside Holiday Classic. The Astorian The Astoria boys bas- ketball team played their best game of the season so far, but unfortunately the Fishermen came up short in overtime Friday night. Scappoose outscored Astoria 14-8 in the ﬁ fth quarter, and left the Brick House with a 62-56 over- time victory over the Fishermen. “We had some chances to win it in regulation, then we missed some free throws (3-for-7) in over- time … but I still feel good about how we played,” said Astoria coach Kevin Goin. “We scored a lot more than we have been, we moved the ball well and we had a better defensive effort.” The former Cowapa League rivals of the Fish- Swim meet: Astoria and Seaside teams set the tone early Continued from Page A8 11, with team depth carrying the Astoria girls and Seaside boys to the team titles. Molalla, Rainier and Val- ley Catholic were the other schools competing in the annual meet that celebrates the life and honors the mem- ory of Andrew Nygaard, a young swimmer with the North Coast Swim Club who died following a work- out in 1998. “Overall it was a good meet,” said Seaside coach Shane Spell. “We had a fair number of kids battling ill- ness this week, but they still responded well. Other teams were dealing with that as well. We need to keep focusing on improving each day. (Next) Friday will be a tough meet at Newport with a lot of fast competition, which will be a great oppor- tunity for some new best times before we head into winter break.” Astoria and Seaside set the tone early, with the Lady Fish winning the 200- yard medley relay in 2 min- utes, 14.24 seconds, with the foursome of juniors Con- stance Rouda, Grace Peeler and Tori Smith and fresh- man Emelia Cameron. Seaside’s squad of soph- omores Leif Rehnert, Liam Matlock and Sam Heroux, along with freshman Masyn McCullock, won the boys’ medley relay in 1:56.40. Astoria’s Riley Cam- eron captured the 200-yard freestyle in a comfortable 2:00.81 (second place time was 2:13.21), then returned later to win the 100-yard freestyle (53.45 seconds). Fishermen freshman Christian Womack won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:51.97. On the girls’ side, Smith won the 200-yard individual medley for Astoria, while Seaside’s Kaisa Liljenwall, a Warrenton student who Seaside’s Leif Rehnert swims the backstroke in Saturday’s Nygaard Invite. In one of the most excit- ing races, Seaside’s four- some of Liljenwall, Taryn Shay, Brooke Blankenhorn and Nicole Blankenhorn won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:58.57, clipping Astoria’s team of Peeler, Rouda, Cameron and Smith (2:01.12). Peeler added a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:26.02), before the Lady Gulls (Liljenwall, Shay, Emily Philbrook, Brooke Blankenhorn) capped their meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:42.56). SEVENDAY FORECAST FOR ASTORIA TODAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY Astoria had to ﬁ nish at least second in the event to win the team title, which the Fishermen did in 5:22.73. For the Seaside boys, “Sam Heroux had a nice 200 IM, dropping off a couple of seconds on his PR from last week, which was a sig- niﬁ cant improvement from districts last season,” Spell said. “Henry Garvin had two solid swims in the 50 and 100, a lot of potential ahead,” he added. “Logan Dennis in the 100 ﬂ y and Leif DeWinter in the 100 breaststroke were strong swims with good time drops.
