Tie, 0-0 Playoff* Astoria’s Jeremy Owen (11) and Seaside’s Natanael Conrad (7) collide while going for a ball early in the second half. The tide will turn the other way, eventu- ally, in the Seaside vs. Astoria boys soccer rivalry. But not yet. For now, the Gulls still own the matchup, as they showed Thursday night at CMH Field. Stephen Snyder’s goal midway through the first half was the only score in Seaside’s 1-0 win over the Fishermen. The first Clat- sop Clash of the season also served as the Cowapa League opener for both teams. With the exception of a 2-2 tie in 2017, the Gulls have now won eight of the last nine games with Astoria. That was after the Fishermen had won seven of eight, with the exception of a 1-1 tie in 2012. Thursday night’s game, however, was not just a routine win for Seaside, which came in as a heavy favorite. The Gulls had played evenly with the No. 1-ranked team at the 3A level, Catlin Gabel, just two nights earlier — and Seaside cer- tainly had the upper hand Thursday in pos- session time, shots and goal and every other statistic, but Astoria coach Lee Cain can live with a 1-0 loss to Seaside. “I was pretty happy with the way the boys played tonight,” Cain said. “Seaside is good, and we could’ve done much worse. We had a plan and they executed it very well.” Astoria’s back line “was really solid,” he said, “with the one exception of one good ball that allowed (the Gulls) through. But we never let up or lost hope, and a scoreless sec- ond half was the result.” Seaside’s defense pitched soccer’s ver- sion of a perfect game, not allowing a single shot on goal. The Fishermen crossed mid- field just five times in the second half. Meanwhile, the Seaside offense con- trolled the action from start to finish. The Gulls’ first three shots on goal were stopped by Astoria goalkeeper Dylan Altheide-Nielson, who had an amazing night in goal (“Dylan had a great game, with 16 saves on our stat sheet,” Cain said). In the 20th minute of the first half, Snyder chased down a long pass down the right side of the field from Westin Carter, and pushed a shot past Altheide-Nielson for what turned out to be the game’s only goal. “Kudos to the defense for switching the ball back across the field, which led to the attack,” said Seaside coach John Chapman. The Gulls had eight shots on goal in the first half, with Altheide-Nielson making four saves. An attempt in the 26th minute by Dodger Holmstedt banged off the crossbar, and a header by Snyder off a corner kick from Holmstedt went over the net. Seaside had four corner kick opportunites in the first half and eight more in the second, when they had seven shots on goal, another by Julio Ortiz that deflected off the crossbar, while Altheide-Nielson made a diving save off a hard shot by Carter in the 69th minute. The Gulls were doing all they could to find a second goal, right up to the final minute. The Fishermen were still missing injured junior defender Yahir Garcia Rojas, but Astoria’s midfield “didn’t lose control, and our forwards played some strong defense in their part of the field,” Cain said. “I think Seaside was frustrated, if not worried. I’m looking forward to our away game with sea- side in October.” GIRLS SOCCER VOLLEYBALL Seaside, Astoria all tied up Warrenton takes down Willamina in five By GARY HENLEY The Astorian A tie —and a scoreless tie, at that — wasn’t exactly a surprise in the first Clatsop Clash girls soccer game of 2019. In a very physical game at CMH Field, Seaside and Astoria battled to a 0-0 tie to open the Cowapa League season. In their 39 meetings since 1999, the Gulls and Fishermen have now tied 10 times, with seven scoreless ties, with three 0-0 ties since 2016. It wasn’t as if both teams didn’t have opportunities in Thursday’s match. Astoria had four shots on goal in the first half, the first on a free kick from 30 yards out by Meghan O’Meara, from the left side. O’Meara’s kick was wide right, missing by just feet. A pass from Elle Espelien to O’Meara resulted in another shot opportunity, this one saved by Seaside freshman goalkeeper Abygale Brien. A shot on goal by Astoria’s Hayley Kelley was deflected, and O’Meara and Espelien traded a pass the other way around for a shot by Espelien, which was knocked down by Brien. Hailey Hughes had Seaside’s only shot on goal of the first half in the 21st minute, with Astoria keeper Taileigh Cole making the save. The game was just as physi- cal in the second half, but just as scoreless. A free kick by Seaside’s Ila Bowles in the 55th minute somehow was deflected out by the Astoria defense before cross- ing the goalline, while a second Seaside attempt by Emily Phil- brook missed to the right. The Lady Fishermen had six shots on goal, with Brien mak- ing a few big saves. Espelien had an attempt from 15 yards out, and Kelley’s shot on goal from 20 yards away with 15:50 remaining was knocked down by Brien. But it was the two defenses that took center stage. Seaside’s Bowles, Lilli Taylor, Susana Velazquez Huanosta and Angela Flores Reyes kept the Fisher- men out of the goal, and Asto- ria defenders Lillian Randall, Brooklyn Zerangue, Maddie Sisley and Erin Grauff turned away the few Seaside attacks. The Gulls, 2-1-2 overall, host Valley Catholic Tuesday, while Astoria (2-2-3) hosts Banks, also Tuesday. The Astorian After four straight losses in nonleague play, the return to league action has been a great move for the Warrenton vol- leyball team. The Warriors won their sec- ond straight match Wednes- day night — and took one step closer to another league title — with a five-set victory over vis- iting Willamina, 25-13, 18-25, 18-25, 27-25, 15-7. The five-set match seemed destined to go only three, at first. Warrenton easily won Game 1, when the Warriors fin- ished the set on a 9-3 run, high- lighted by a long serving string from Nora Ayo. But Willamina didn’t go down so easily, coming back to win the second and third sets by identical 25-18 scores. It always helps to have a transfer from Spain on your roster, and Ayo served up another long string of points for the Warriors in Game 4. Warrenton led for nearly the entire set, which included a Warrior lead of 24-20. But the ‘Dogs fought back, tied it at 24-24, then grabbed a 25-24 lead, one point away from match victory. But Willamina’s nemesis the entire evening — missed serves — came back to bite the Bulldogs, who couldn’t finish off the Warriors when Warren- ton tied it at 25-25 on missed serve by Willamina. And that was all the War- riors needed, as they reeled off the next two points to even the match at two games apiece. Game 5 belonged to War- renton right from the start, as Mia McFadden served the Warriors to a 2-0 lead, a kill and a block by Avyree Miethe made it 5-1, and — leading 10-7 — Warrenton’s Melia Kapua served out the match, using a pair of aces to give the Warriors the final five points and the win. Warrenton is in the driv- er’s seat for the league title, improving to 3-0, while Willa- mina drops to 1-1, tied for sec- ond with Taft. The Warriors (6-8 overall) play at winless Rainier (0-8) next Tuesday.
