Seaside’s Travis Fenton saw action at center for the West, which snapped a four-game losing streak to the East. The East still leads the all-time series, 33-31-3. The annual game culminates a weekend of activ- ities, and showcases the top seniors in the state from the 1A to 4A levels for the 2018 season. The West built a 30-0 lead through three quar- ters, taking advantage of six turnovers (three inter- ceptions, three fumbles) by the East squad. Banks graduate Hayden Vandehey, who quarter- backed the Braves to the 2018 4A state champion- ship, completed 20-of-34 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns for the West. His favorite target was his teammate from Banks, Blake Markham, who caught nine passes for 107 yards. The West racked up 456 yards in total offense. Vandehey had fi rst-half touchdown tosses to Markham and Stayton’s Sean Bodi, and two fourth-quarter scoring passes to Markham and Rain- ier’s Joey Tripp. The game is the largest fundraiser in Oregon for the Shriners Hospital and is considered the sec- ond-largest athletic money-maker for Shriners Hos- pitals in North America, according to Shriners International. Five Astoria basketball players teamed up to win the consolation bracket of their divi- sion in the Salem Hoopla 3-on-3 tournament, held last weekend in downtown Salem. Competing in the 14-and-under boys competitive division, Astoria’s Niko Bou- dreau, Luke Cummings, Oscar Hatangmi- ana, Xavier Phanthongphay and Brayden Rogers — the “Swishy Fishies” — defeated the JC (Junction City) Tigers in Sunday’s consolation championship. The Astoria team was winless in pool play Saturday, dropping games to South- side (36-17), Catch & Shoot (24-16) and the Tigers (36-24) to fi nish 0-3 on Day 1. But the Fishies turned it around and went 3-0 in Sunday’s consolation bracket, scor- ing victories over the Springfi eld Elite (24- 20) and the Neon Turtles (26-24), before the consolation-clinching win over the JC Tigers.
