Jazz and blues singer, folk-soul-pop ensemble set to perform at KALA ASTORIA – A South American jazz and West African blues singer-songwriter and folk-soul-pop ensemble are coming to KALA. Myshkin Warbler will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 20, and the Alec Hut- son Band will play at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 25. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for both con- certs. Tickets are $10 at the door for Mysh- kin Warber and $15 for the Alec Hutson Band. Warbler has played in Astoria at the Tenor Guitar Gatherings, KALA and most recently with her wife Jenny Q. and vocal- ist Dinah Urell at the 2019 Pride Gayla. She has invited long-time friend Sailor Banks to open the show and perform her original elec- tronic music. Warbler is also a guitarist and plans to experiment at the upcoming show. Local musicians David Crabtree and Ray Coffey will open on guitar and sax/flute for the Alec Hutson Band. Hutson is a Boston-based singer, song- writer and multi-instrumentalist. He is on West Coast tour with his band this summer after a solo European Tour in 2018. The folk-soul-pop ensemble vibes and grooves with an emphasis on songwriting and melody. With drums, bass, guitar and trumpet, it’s the horn connection that brings them to Astoria. Trumpeter Devina Boughton is the niece of Astorian and trumpeter Mark Berney, who last year played to a sold-out house at KALA. Boughton, a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, made a surprise performance and wowed everyone with her musical prowess. Summer Academy students present projects at CCC July 24 ASTORIA — High school students in Clatsop Community College’s Upward Bound Summer Academy will present group-projects at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, at Patriot Hall, 1651 Lexington Ave. Students will give a live performance at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The students will present projects on a local digital scavenger hunt, ecology, solar energy and improv. Students from Astoria, Warrenton and Seaside high schools have worked together throughout the past six weeks to create projects focused on local history and tech- nology, ecology, improv acting and alterna- tive energy. The summer academy is part of a TRiO pre-college program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program pro- vides advising, tutoring, mentoring, cultural enrichment and academic instruction to promote success in higher education. First Annual Ferry Street Block Party kicks off July 19 in Astoria ASTORIA – The first annual Ferry Street Friday Block Party kicks off at 2 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, on 14th St. between Commercial St. and Marine Drive. The Block Party is a family-friendly event that will feature live music and a barbeque. Activities for children include a take- home art project using recycled items, face painting and lawn games made for the street. Adults can also enjoy a wine and beer garden. A variety of local DJs and bands will perform including The Garbage Man (DJ) at 2 p.m.; Rhythm Method at 3 p.m.; Joey Altruda (DJ) at 4 p.m.; Hol- iday Friends at 5 p.m.; Serious River Song Catalogue at 6 p.m. and Midas Diggs & Friends at 7 p.m. Albatross & Co. will host an after party at 8 p.m. with a set from The Woolen Men. Ferry Street Society businesses will host pop-up events that feature local makers, artists and farmers at each shop. Hosts include: Chariot, Doe + Arrow, 4 Seasons Clothing, Street 14 Cafe, Lode- star Goods, Gimre’s Shoes, Purple Cow Toys and Creations Studio & Gallery.
