C14 THE ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2019 Help fund Astoria Nordic Heritage Park Olney Grange Nordic Heritage Park will honor the immigrant tradition that brought thousands of Scandinavians and immigrants from Northern Lands to Oregon’s North Coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It will be a public space to make locals and visitors alike aware of the ethnic heri- tage that contributed immensely to the fab- ric of our community. It will honor families that said their last good-byes and moved to Astoria to become Americans. Like “The Garden of Surging Waves” that was erected during Astoria’s Bicentennial to honor Chinese immigrants, this monument to Nordic immigrants will contribute to increased awareness of all cul- tures in our community. Oregon Community Foundation grant funds supported Phase One of this multi- year project. Initial activities included exploring design options, securing a site for the mon- ument, partnering with the Astoria Rotary Club for maintenance, and gaining City approval for a formal agreement in Decem- ber 2017. ASHA signed the agreement in January 2018 and hired former City plan- ner Rosemary Johnson to work as liaison Welcome hosts opening dinner at Festival The West Studio A rendering of the proposed Astoria Scandinavian Heritage Park. between ASHA and the City. The lodge was the second chartered in Oregon and was #215 in the United States. It was formed to get Swedish immigrants together to learn the English language and socialize with other Swedes who had come to the United States searching for a new dream. Since then, it has been an active group of Swedes and friends keeping the Swedish heritage alive in Clatsop County. Local lodge activities include Sankta Lucia celebrations in December, a Pea soup booth at the Astoria Scandinavian Midsum- mer Festival, picnics and informative meet- ings each month. The lodge also sponsors a junior and senior princess for the Annual Astoria Scan- dinavian Midsummer Festival Court each year. Vasa Order of America promotes youth through scholarships, trips abroad and lan- guage camp experiences. The lodge meets the fi rst Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. September through June at First Lutheran Church, 725 33rd St., in Astoria. Being of Swedish descent is not a prereq- uisite to join the fun at the Astor Lodge. Anyone interested in Swedish traditions and culture is most welcome to join.
