THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2019 // 3 Washed Ashore presents ‘Art to Save the Sea’ Come sail away with the Astoria Yacht Club SEASIDE — Artists and com- munity organizers gather to reclaim the future and ignite powerful social change in consumer and visi- tor behavior. Everyone who has seen Washed Ashore’s stunning pieces of pub- lic art made from reclaimed marine debris has wondered “How’d they do that?” Art to Save The Sea happens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 at Sea- side Brewing, 851 Broadway. Search Eventbright “Art To Save The Sea” for additional events in Bay City, Gleneden Beach, Yachats and Brookings. Attendees of these gatherings will learn the process behind these masterpieces and see a visual presentation by John Tan- nous, executive director of Washed Ashore, which explains the process. Over the next two years several coast Photo by Washed Ashore large pieces of public art will be created and sighted in various com- munities on the central and North Oregon Coast. Communities inter- ested in securing such a piece of public art should attend and inquire about the siting process. After learning about the unique process Washed Ashore has cham- pioned, interested artists and com- munity organizers can apply for a INSIDE THIS ISSUE weekend arts & entertainment 4 7 9 THE ARTS multi-week artist residency in Ban- don to dive deeper into their pro- cess and support the creation of future pieces of public art from marine debris. ASTORIA — Astoria Yacht Club holds its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, in conjunc- tion with the opening day of sail racing. At 1 p.m., there is a skip- pers’ meeting before the fi rst race, which begins at 2. Both activities will take place in the club’s meeting room upstairs in the Chinook building, 300 Industry St., at the West Moor- ing Basin. Club members will be on hand to answer questions about the club and about sailing and boating on the Lower Colum- bia and northwest coastal waters. In addition to information about the club and its annual schedule of on-the-water and social events, participants can hear about the annual Oregon Offshore sailboat race from Astoria to Victoria, British Columbia, and learn about sail- ing on the Lower Columbia. A talk covering crew safety and responsibilities, proper clothing and gear and basic ori- entation to sailing is at 11 a.m. Depending on available ves- sels, participants will have a chance to get underway with club members that afternoon. Prospective crew are asked to bring a warm jacket, hat and life jacket, if they have one.
