As it was, the Taft softball team scored six runs in the fifth inning — including five runs with two outs — and that sparked the Tigers to a 7-3 win Tuesday afternoon over the Warriors. Other than one-half inning, Warrenton went toe-to-toe with the Tigers, even holding a 3-1 lead through four innings. Warrior pitcher Mia McFadden had the Taft hitters off-balance, while the Warrenton infield came within inches of turning a triple play in the top of the fifth, which would have ended Taft’s big inning after just one run scored. Instead, the Tigers managed to avoid the tri- ple play, after which they had three hits and two hit batters, and took advantage of a Warrenton error to score three of the next five runs. Taft pitcher Emma Coulter did the rest, toss- ing a six-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks. She kept the Warriors scoreless over their last four at-bats. Coulter retired 11 of the final 14 batters she faced, giving up seventh inning singles to Claire Bussert and Avyree Miethe. Miethe had three hits and Kenzie Ramsey had a pair of singles for the Warriors, who drop to 2-6 in league, but are still ranked 15th in the latest state rankings. Coulter was 4-for-4 at the plate to her own cause, and Taft finished with 12 hits off two Warrenton pitchers. The Tigers stranded 12 baserunners, while the Warriors turned a pair of double plays, but committed four errors. Knappa scored four runs in the first inning, followed by four in the second, three in the third, six in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Nine different Loggers had hits, three apiece for Tristin Wal- lace, Logan Bartlett and Cameron Miethe. Bartlett had a single, triple and a home run, and drove in six runs for Knappa, which had seven doubles and three triples. The Loggers host Portland Christian for a doubleheader Friday. Jake Morrow also had a double and two runs batted in for Warrenton, which improves to 8-1 in league, first place over Rainier (6-3), which swept a doubleheader from Clatskanie. The Warriors play a doubleheader Friday at Clatskanie. Seaside second, Astoria third in league tournament The Daily Astorian Seaside finished second, and the Astoria girls golf team shot its sec- ond-best team score of the year to finish third, in the Cowapa League championships. The Fishermen were the host team Monday for the one-day tournament at the Astoria Golf & Country Club, where Valley Cath- olic won the team title with a 369 team score. Seaside finished second behind the Valiants with a 444, followed by Astoria (449) and Tillamook (507). Valley Catholic’s Challin Kim was a medalist with an 83, topping teammate Megan Birrell (93) by 10 strokes. Annmarie Gallardo of Valley Catholic was third with a 95, one stroke ahead of Astoria’s Jenna Travers with a 96. Rounding out the Seaside scores were Emma Arden (124) and Elise Seppa (126), while Asto- ria’s Annalyse Steele shot a 124, followed by teammates Katie Bou- tin (129) and Constance Rouda (137). The Cowapa golfers will be in action again on Monday and Tuesday, in the state-qualifying regional tournament at Quail Val- ley Golf Course. SCHEDULE W EDNESDAY E VENING L Knappa’s Vicki Ramvick was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in, more than enough for the Loggers in a 17-2 Northwest League softball win Tuesday at Portland Christian. Knappa improves to 10-6 in league play, second in the stand- ings behind Vernonia. Portland Christian falls to 0-17 overall. Emily Nicholson pitched the first three innings for the Log- gers to pick up the win, with Hannah Dietrichs tossing the final two innings.
