On the girls’ side, Astoria won 14 of the 17 events, while the Astoria boys recorded nine wins and used their depth to pile up the points. Meet highlights for the Lady Fishermen included per- sonal best marks in wins for freshman Lindsay Riutta in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 36.56 seconds), sophomore Allyson Pritchard in the 1,500 meters (5:40.52), sophomore Kelsey Fausett in the javelin (109 feet, 11 inches) and freshman Mad- die Sisley in the long jump (15-8). Three Astoria boys had their own career-best marks, in vic- tories for Shrey Sharma (400 meters, 56.34), sophomore Lathen Schultz (300-meter hurdles, 46.46) and freshman Colton McMaster (discus, 135-2). The Fishermen compete Saturday in the Rob Frank Invitational at Banks. Seaside competes at Valley Catholic Valley Catholic hosted a three-way dual track meet Wednesday with Banks and Seaside. The Lady Gulls had several wins, highlighted by freshman Lilli Taylor in the 400 meters (in a personal best time of 1 minute, 8.79 seconds), and senior Ana Rojas with a per- sonal best time of 13:21.52 to win the 3,000 meters. For the Seaside boys, soph- omore Henry Garvin recorded a personal best 23.30 to win the 200 meters, and Levi Card soared a career-best 40 feet, ½ inch to win the triple jump. BASEBALL Norris highlights Astoria win over Seaside After a six-day layoff, the Astoria softball team returned to action Thursday with an 11-1 win over Seaside in Cow- apa League action at CMH Field. The Lady Fishermen high- lighted their day with a sev- en-run fourth inning, in which Emma Biederman had a bas- es-loaded triple and scored on an error on the same hit. Astoria pitcher Julia Norris tossed a one-hitter, with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings. She was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. Lexi Lyngstad finished 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. The Fishermen host a big game Monday with Banks, followed by five straight road games, beginning with a non- league contest Tuesday at War- renton. ASTORIA SHUTS OUT SEASIDE, 6-0 By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian S EASIDE — There were no late- game rallies this time for the Sea- side Gulls in Clatsop Clash II, which took place Thursday afternoon at Broadway Field. The Astoria baseball team made sure of that, as the Fishermen played a flaw- less defensive game for a 6-0 win over the Gulls in a Cowapa League baseball contest. Astoria also gained a little Clatsop Clash payback, after losing an 8-6 deci- sion April 2 to Seaside at CMH Field in the first meeting. The Gulls overcame a 6-4 deficit with four runs in the top of the seventh inning in that game. Fishermen pitcher Dylan Rush never gave the Gulls a chance in Thursday’s rematch, as the junior right-hander scat- tered four hits and struck out seven with two walks in a complete-game victory. “He’s thrown two complete games now, and it seems like every time he pitches he goes deep into the game,” said Astoria coach Glen Fromwiller. “I don’t know if it was his best outing (Rush also hit three batters), but he was looking like himself tonight.” The Fishermen gave Rush all the runs he would need with three runs in the third inning. Will Reed led off with a double, the first of five players to reach base safely to start the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Rush and Adam Feldman had back- to-back run-scoring singles, and Ryan Stutznegger scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Ebin Hillard. Fromwiller did not need (or want) to remind his team of the last meeting with the Gulls. “I intentionally didn’t say anything about that game,” he said. “I’m sure they were thinking of it, but why bring it up? It’s a new day, a new game, and I didn’t need them thinking about it. “And it wasn’t just that game,” he said. “Our main problem has been not finishing games. Both the Seaside and Banks games, we lost leads because we couldn’t finish.” In addition to collecting nine hits in Thursday’s win, Astoria played error- free defense, with Feldman highlighting the game with several long throws from his third base position to catch runners at first. Offensively, Reed, Feldman and Stutznegger had two hits apiece, includ- ing a triple by Stutznegger in the sixth inning, in which Seaside turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Mariners blow 8-run lead, rally for 11-10 win over Angels By GREG BEACHAM Associated press ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jay Bruce delivered a tiebreaking pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth, and the Seat- tle Mariners blew a late eight-run lead before rallying for an 11-10 vic- tory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Ryon Healy homered twice and drove in five runs, and Omar Nar- vaez added a three-run shot as the Mariners snapped a six-game skid even after wasting a 10-2 lead head- ing to the bottom of the seventh. David Fletcher hit a tying homer leading off the eighth after the Angels put up seven runs in the seventh. But the Mariners rallied against Angels closer Cody Allen (0-1) for their ninth win in 10 road games this season. Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer and Andrelton Simmons had three hits while driving in two runs for the Angels, who lost their fourth straight in heartbreaking fashion. Los Angeles’ six-game home win- ning streak also ended, interrupting the Halos’ best start to a season at home since 1982. Albert Pujols also drove in two runs, giving him 1,991 career RBIs. He is one RBI behind Babe Ruth for fifth place in baseball history. Right after the Mariners scored three runs while batting around in the seventh, the Angels scored seven runs on seven hits while sending 11 men to the plate in the bottom half. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but couldn’t score. Fletcher then tied it with the second homer of his big league career on the second pitch by Anthony Swarzak (2-0), who even- tually struck out Brian Goodwin with two Angels in scoring position to keep it tied. Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his third save. Healy hit a three-run homer in the second and a two-run shot in the sixth for the Mariners in their sixth consecutive road win.
