Bird populations are one of the National Park Ser- vice’s key vital signs, mon- itored as a way to determine the health of a park’s habitat . “So just like a doctor would monitor blood pres- sure or your temperature, land bird populations are one of those things that we monitor,” Clatterbuck said. Though several bird spe- cies were not doing as well and there are still serious questions about how cli- mate change might impact even robust bird populations in the long term, researchers are encouraged by what they have seen over the years. ‘Locally rare’ Lewis and Clark is home to estuaries and freshwater wetlands, as well as coastal and upland forests — hab- itats that are “locally rare,” according to the report. These pockets of unique habitat provide a sort of oasis to a variety of birds and are important to conserve cer- tain bird populations . “The different habitats attract a great mix of birds and we often ﬁ nd species in this park that we rarely see in the other areas we sur- vey,” Mandy Holmgren, a biologist with T he Insti- tute for Bird Populations, who has monitored birds at Lewis and Clark, said in a statement. So what’s next? To Ray, some of the log- ical follow-up actions at Lewis and Clark would be to look at why some species — such as the small songbird Hutton’s v ireo or the color- ful Northern ﬂ icker, a mem- ber of the woodpecker fam- ily — are declining. These birds seem to be experiencing a more general decline across the Paciﬁ c Northwest, Ray said, “and it is not yet clear whether these parks are providing suitable habitat for these species.” Continued monitoring — and longer data sets — will also be necessary if the parks want to more clearly judge the effects of climate on bird populations. Lewis and Clark rang- ers and volunteers partici- pate in the Great Backyard Bird Count every year, host- ing a range of activities, from birdwatching hikes to lectures, to get the public involved in spotting birds. But few of the park’s restoration and habitat enhancement projects have been bird-centric, Clatter- buck said. Still, wetland res- toration projects, primarily intended to help endangered salmon , end up beneﬁ ting a host of other species, includ- ing birds that feed or nest in wetland areas. Recently, the park ﬁ n- ished up thinning work as part of forest restoration and purposefully created snags — standing dead or dying trees — to enhance bird habitat. “We’re hoping that will provide some good wood- pecker habitat,” Clatterbuck said. Listening Lab The park has also begun to track birds along its slice of the Paciﬁ c Flyway, a major migration route from Patagonia to Alaska. Microphones, set up at two different locations at Lewis and Clark , are turned on during the spring migra- tion. The Colorado State University Listening Lab later analyzes the audio ﬁ les. Sound recordings are a low-cost way for scien- tists to collect information about what species are pres- ent in an area. Cole was ﬁ rst inspired to experiment with bio acoustic monitoring after listening to an episode of “Science Friday,” a weekly public radio show and pod- cast, in 2013. She felt it could be an easy — and fascinating — way to detect species and measure the timing of the spring migration. Several other national parks have since joined Lewis and Clark, but Cole hopes to get even more parks along the West Coast involved. “Our primary research question is the timing of the spring migration, and how this may vary over time, particularly with climate change,” she said. The ﬁ nancial situation was due to lower-than-ex- pected enrollment and unpaid pledges. After news of the poten- tial closure broke, the acad- emy received “a surge of support,” said Amy Fred- rickson, the school’s exec- utive director. The school began receiving many of the missing pledges — including a $33,000 pledge that originally was not going to be paid until the end of the school year. A surprise $20,000 donation from Tim and Rhonda Snider, who recently moved to Cannon Beach, also helped, Fred- rickson said. The family has also pledged to match up to $20,000 in additional donations until June. The donations have helped the academy come “very, very close” to addressing the shortfall, Fredrickson said. “I’m never surprised by the support of the com- munity,” she said. “We’ve talked about overcom- ing hurdles over and over again, and I think that’s just going to be our thing, I think.” C onsistent fundraising will continue to be critical to make the charter school ﬁ nancially sustainable. With the last of the pledges from previous years being paid out this year, the academy’s top focuses will be on boosting enrollment and organiz- ing more ways to fundraise throughout the year . “Those are the two things that will keep us here,” Fredrickson said. More fundraising will be critical as the academy, which has 31 students , hopes to expand to 50 next year. It will be the ﬁ rst year the school will offer kindergarten through ﬁ fth grade. The school opened in 2017. “We are so grateful that (the community) sees this as an investment in the community and in the kids’ future,” Fredrickson said.
