Seaside is expected to be there, and over the weekend the Gulls played one of the candidates. For the second year in a row, Newport and Seaside met in the championship game of the Seaside Holiday Classic. And after Newport’s victory over Sea- side last season, the Gulls got their revenge and a little bit more Saturday night, scoring a 66-47 win over the Cubs in front of a full house at the Gulls’ Nest. Seaside won Friday’s semifinal game, 81-50, over Corbett. The Gulls had the game locked up early, with a 17-6 lead just min- utes into the game, and 47-23 by halftime. Januik led Seaside with 21 points, fol- lowed by Hague (18) and Westerholm (14). The Gulls take part in the Summit Hol- iday Tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday in Bend. Elma edges Seaside girls in title game SEASIDE — The Elma girls basketball team enjoyed winning last year’s Seaside Holiday Classic so much, they came back After losses to Elma and Newport in the first two rounds, the Astoria girls basket- ball team was determined to finish the Sea- side Holiday Classic on a good note Satur- day morning. And that’s just what the No. 9-ranked Lady Fishermen did in their 9 a.m. tipoff against Corbett, as Astoria built a 24-4 lead after one quarter on its way to a 66-23 win. After beating Astoria in last year’s title game of the tournament, the Eagles held off a big challenge from Seaside in Saturday’s championship contest, 37-30. The Eagles had to overcome some heavy foul trouble and a defensive-minded Seaside team, by breaking a 23-23 tie in the fourth quarter and outscoring the Gulls 14-7 over the final six minutes. Astoria went 1-2 overall in the Seaside Holiday Classic, but the Fishermen boys basketball team finished strong, and as coach Kevin Goin said, “We’re figuring out how to score.” The Fishermen definitely had more play- ers scoring more points on the final two days, which featured an 83-72 loss to Madras on Friday, followed by a 65-58 win over Cot- tage Grove Saturday morning. Ian Hunt scored a combined 42 points (22 vs. Madras, 20 vs. Cottage Grove), Connor Long had 16 and 14 points, respectively, and Xander Marincovich scored 10 points Fri- day and 12 in Saturday’s win. In Friday’s loss to Madras, the White Buffaloes held a 62-39 lead midway through the second half, before the Fishermen rallied and scored 33 points in the fourth quarter, closing to within six points. Astoria will play another three games in three days later this week, as the Fishermen get set to host the 50th annual Vince Dulcich Memorial tournament Thursday through Saturday. Astoria is scheduled to play Elma, Rain- ier and Ridgefield. Warrenton cruises to nonleague win Warrenton took a break from league com- petition Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors hosted a nonleague contest with the winless Willamette Valley Christian Warriors. And Warrenton improved to 5-4 overall with a 68-41 win over the Class 1A team, which drops to 0-10. Knappa ends Dayton tourney with two wins Knappa bounced back from a loss on Day 1 of the Dayton boys basketball tour- nament with two straight wins to close out the weekend. The Loggers defeated Class 3A Pleas- ant Hill 63-58 Friday, then followed with a 77-46 decision Saturday afternoon over Class 1A Perrydale.
