DECEMBER 20, 2018 // 17 Writing contest supports fundraising for local libraries SEASIDE — The Seaside Public Library Foundation will publish its second annual short story anthology to sup- port the Libraries Reading Outreach program, which provides library cards to children in Clatsop County. Writers are invited to submit a short story (1,500 words maximum) with a theme of books or libraries. Winning entries will be featured at the Libraries ROCC Fundraiser on Sun- day, April 14, at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center, where writers will have the chance to read an excerpt from their story and speak about their writing process. In the submitted story, writers should include at least two characters that event attendees can bid on to name for the final version of the story that will be included in the anthology. Stories must be submitted electronically via email to librariesread- ingoutreach@gmail.com. Writers will be notified of receipt once a $10 entry fee has been submitted via check to Libraries ROCC at 1131 Broadway St., Seaside, OR 97138. Stories should be submit- ted as Word documents and should be family friendly. For additional guidelines, visit seasidelibrary.org. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of local judges, including local au- thors Melissa Eskue Ousley and Deb Vanasse, and Ken Heman, a Visitor Informa- tion Specialist with the City of Seaside Visitors Bureau. Winning entries will be an- nounced on Friday, Feb. 22. Official Rules: Photo Contest opens Friday, Nov. 9, and closes midnight Sunday, Dec. 16. The Daily Astorian staff will choose the top 10. The public can vote online for People’s Choice from Monday, Dec. 17, through Sunday, Dec. 23. Digital or scanned photos only, uploaded to the online platform. No physical copies. Writers: Describe life on the North Coast CANNON BEACH — With its ocean, forests and rivers, the North Coast is a special place to live and visit. The Cannon Beach Library is offering an opportunity for residents and visitors to write about life on the North Coast. Selected submissions will be read at a “Writers Read” gathering in the library on Friday, March 1. The deadline to submit a piece for consideration is Friday, Jan. 18. Submissions can be sent to info@cannonbeachli- brary.org or mailed to the Cannon Beach Library, PO Box 486, Cannon Beach, OR 97110. What is your connection to the North Coast? What draws you to stay here? Is there a place, an experience, an emotion or an everyday occurrence that illustrates your feelings about the North Coast? Anyone can participate in the Writers Read project. A group that includes library volunteers, a bookstore Only photographers from Oregon and Washington may participate. The contest subject matter is wide open (keep it G-rated). Entrants may crop, tone, adjust saturation and make minor enhancements, but may not add or remove objects within the frame, or doctor images such that the final product doesn’t represent what’s actually before the camera. Submit all photos online at: owner and local writer will read the submissions and select six to 10 to be read by their authors at the gathering at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1. Writers must follow these guidelines: • Limit submissions to 600 words. • Please write to the theme “Life on the North Coast.” • Do not put your name or contact information on your story. The group will read the pieces without knowing who wrote them. However, please include the writer’s name, email address and phone number in a cover letter. • Any format, including personal essay, poetry, story, etc., will be considered. Writers whose works are chosen to be read will be notified after the committee considers them. Writers should be available to attend the March 1 gathering.
