Trump pledged to dis- solve the three-decade-old foundation and donate its funds to charity after his 2016 election, but that was only after it found itself under investigation in New York state. The attorney gen- eral’s offi ce said it would have been “unacceptable” to let the foundation fold with- out close supervision from a judge. Trump Foundation law- yer Alan Futerfas said the nonprofi t has distributed approximately $19 mil- lion over the past decade, including $8.25 million of the president’s own money, to hundreds of charitable organizations. The agreement was reached after a New York judge last month rejected arguments from the founda- tion’s lawyers that the law- suit was politically moti- vated and should be thrown out. Once the judge approves the deal to dissolve the char- ity, the two sides will have 30 days to provide her with a list of nonprofi t organi- zations that should get the remaining funds. Each char- ity will get the same amount, and the attorney general’s offi ce will have the right to reject ones it deems unfi t to receive funds. In her lawsuit, Under- wood alleged that Trump used the foundation to help bolster his campaign by giv- ing out big grants of oth- er’s people money to veter- ans organizations during the run-up to the Iowa caucuses, the fi rst presidential nomi- nating contest of 2016. Trump was also accused of directing that $100,000 in foundation money be used to settle legal claims over an 80-foot fl agpole he had built at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, instead of paying the expense out of his own pocket. In addition, the foun- dation paid $158,000 to resolve a lawsuit over a prize for a hole-in-one contest at a Trump-owned golf course; $10,000 to buy a 6-foot (1.8- meter) portrait of Trump at a charity auction; and $5,000 for ads promoting Trump’s hotels in the programs for charitable events. Underwood sued the Trump Foundation after tak- ing over for fellow Demo- crat Eric Schneiderman, who resigned in May amid alle- gations he abused women. Schneiderman started investigating the founda- tion in 2016 and ordered it to stop fundraising in New York after The Washing- ton Post reported that some of its spending personally benefi ted the presidential candidate. Underwood has referred her offi ce’s fi ndings to the IRS and the Federal Election Commission. Those agen- cies have not commented on the matter. WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Offi cial: US to withdraw all American troops in Syria WASHINGTON — The Trump admin- istration will withdraw all of the approx- imately 2,000 American troops in Syria, according to a U.S. offi cial, as the White House declared victory Wednesday in the mission to defeat Islamic State militants there. Planning for the pullout has begun and troops will begin leaving as soon as possi- ble. President Donald Trump said American forces no longer were needed in a country torn apart by long-running civil war. Trump has said since he was a presiden- tial candidate that he wanted to bring back troops from the Middle East. But offi cials have said in recent weeks that pockets of IS militants remain. U.S. policy has been that American forces would stay in place until the extremists were eradicated. In addition, Pentagon and other offi cials have said that U.S. troops were countering Iran-backed militants in Syria, which was an expansion of the U.S. mission. Reports of an abrupt withdrawal drew quick criticism from Congress. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said a full and rapid removal of troops would be a “grave error with broader implications” beyond the fi ght against IS. THE DAILY ASTORIAN Sweeping criminal justice bill passed by Senate WASHINGTON — The Senate passed a sweeping criminal justice bill Tuesday that addresses concerns that the nation’s war on drugs had led to the imprisonment of too many Americans for non-violent crimes without adequately preparing them for their return to society. Senate passage of the bill by a vote of 87-12 culminates years of negotiations and gives President Donald Trump a signature policy victory, with the outcome hailed by scores of conservative and liberal advocacy groups. The House is expected to pass the bill this week, sending it to the president’s desk for his signature. The bill gives judges more discretion when sentencing some drug offenders and boosts prisoner rehabilitation efforts. It also reduces the life sentence for some drug offenders with three convictions, or “three strikes,” to 25 years. Another provision would allow about 2,600 federal prisoners sentenced for crack cocaine offenses before August 2010 the opportunity to petition for a reduced penalty. “America is the greatest Country in the world and my job is to fi ght for ALL citi- zens, even those who have made mistakes,” Trump tweeted moments after the vote. The vote also thrilled Democrats. Sen. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McCon- nell announced the quick turn of events, say- ing it was a “simple” bill but will show that Republicans, who have majority control of Congress, will fi nish the year by governing rather than prolonging a potential crisis. He also lashed out at Democrats, who are taking control of the House in January, for failing to give Trump any of the $5 billion the president wanted for the wall along the U.S. southern border with Mexico. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats would support the measure. US reviews report of imports from forced labor in China camp BEIJING — The U.S. government said Tuesday that it is reviewing reports of forced labor at a Chinese internment camp where ethnic minorities are sewing clothes that have been shipped to the U.S. market. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that reporting by The Associ- ated Press and other media “for the fi rst time appears to link the internment camps identi- fi ed in Western China to the importation of goods produced by forced labor by a U.S. company.” The AP tracked shipments from a factory in a camp in China’s far western Xinjiang region to Badger Sportswear in North Car- olina. The company ships clothing to uni- versities, colleges and schools around the United States.
