Scott Walker. Republicans pushed on through protests, internal disagreement and Democratic opposi- tion in a lame-duck legislative session to reduce the powers of Gov.-elect Tony Evers and Dem- ocratic Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul. Both Evers and Kaul warned that resulting law- suits would bring more gridlock to Wisconsin when the new administration — and the first divided government in 10 years — takes over in January. Republicans were battered in the midterm election — losing all statewide races amid strong Democratic turnout — but they retained legislative majorities thanks to what Democrats say are gerrymandered districts that tilt the map against them. The GOP power grab comes after North Carolina lawmakers took similar steps two years ago, and as Michigan Republicans are discussing taking action before a Democratic governor takes over there. Republicans passed the legislation in an all-night session marked by stops and starts as GOP leaders tried to muster enough votes in the Senate. That chamber ultimately approved the package 17-16, with just one Republican vot- ing against it, around sunrise. The Assembly approved it on a 56-27 vote about two hours later, sending it on to Walker, with just one Republican defecting. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser pro- vided so much information to the special coun- sel’s Russia investigation that prosecutors say he shouldn’t do any prison time, according to a court filing that describes Michael Flynn’s cooperation as “substantial.” The filing by special counsel Robert Muel- ler provides the first details of Flynn’s assistance in the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible contacts with the Trump campaign. Flynn participated in 19 interviews with prosecutors and cooperated extensively in a sep- arate and undisclosed criminal probe, according to the filing. But the document’s lengthy redac- tions also underscore how much Mueller has yet to reveal. It was filed Tuesday, two weeks ahead of Flynn’s sentencing and just over a year after he became one of five Trump associates to plead guilty in the Russia probe — in his case admit- ting to lying to the FBI about conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. before Trump took office. After CIA briefing, senators lay blame on Saudi crown prince WASHINGTON — Breaking with Presi- dent Donald Trump, senators leaving a briefing with CIA Director Gina Haspel on Tuesday said they are even more convinced that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair- man Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said he believes if the crown prince were put on trial, a jury would find him guilty in “about 30 minutes.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who demanded the briefing with Haspel, said there is “zero chance” the crown prince wasn’t involved in Khashoggi’s death. “There’s not a smoking gun. There’s a smok- ing saw,” Graham said, referring to reports from the Turkish government that said Saudi agents used a bone saw to dismember Khashoggi after he was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Graham said “you have to be willfully blind” not to conclude that this was orchestrated and organized by people under the crown prince’s command. Trump has equivocated over who is to blame for the killing, frustrating senators who are now looking for ways to punish the longtime Middle East ally. The Senate overwhelmingly voted last week to move forward on a resolution curtailing U.S. backing for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. protesters were demanding much more. Students set fires outside high schools to protest a new university application system. Small-business owners blocked roads to protest high taxes. Pensioners marched to protest the president’s perceived elitism. Trade unions have not so far played a role in the improvised movement, but are now try- ing to capitalize on the growing public anger. A joint statement from the CGT and FO truck- ing unions called for action beginning Sun- day night to protest a cut in overtime rates, and asked for an urgent meeting with the transporta- tion minister. French police have cleared most of the fuel depots that protesters had blocked, but fuel shortages continued to hit several parts of France on today, with hundreds of gas stations affected. Protesters, now joined by unions, reject French concessions LONDON — A U.K. Parliament commit- tee accused Facebook today of cutting special deals with some advertisers to give them more access to data as it released 250 pages worth of documents on the tech giant’s internal dis- cussions about the value of users’ personal information. Parliament’s media committee seized con- fidential Facebook documents from the devel- oper of a now-defunct bikini photo searching app as part of its investigation into fake news. The committee says Facebook “whitelisted” or gave preferential access to certain companies, such as Airbnb and Netflix, even after the tech giant announced changes in 2015 to end access to a user’s “friends.” PARIS — Trade unions and farmers pledged today to join nationwide protests against Presi- dent Emmanuel Macron, as concessions by the government failed to stem the momentum of the most violent demonstrations France has seen in decades.
