Seaside swimmers looking to make a splash in district By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian T heir state medal- ist swimmer is gone, but the Seaside Gulls still have plenty of swimmers who can score points as they enter the 2018-19 season. Head coach Shane Spell and the Gulls finished in the middle of the pack in last year’s district meet, with one individual qualifying for state in two events, along with one relay team making the trip to Gresham. Only one member of the relay team is back, as Henry Garvin returns for his soph- omore season after helping Seaside’s 200-yard freestyle relay squad qualify for the state meet a year ago. Dawson Blanchard and Isaiah Collins have gradu- ated, while Josh Shipley — who was a junior at Warren- ton High School last year and competed for Seaside — is not on the Gulls’ preseason roster. Shipley was the district champion in the 50-yard free- style and the 100-yard breast- stroke, and brought home a second-place medal in the freestyle from the state meet. But, the Gulls still have a short list of swimmers with state-qualifying potential, especially with Scappoose out of the district picture. Heading the list for the Lady Gulls is senior Kendy Lin, who took fourth in the district 200-yard freestyle last year and just missed out on a wild-card berth for the state meet. Lin was also fifth in the backstroke final at districts. Also back are Lin’s three teammates in the 200 free- style relay, which had the fifth-best time in the district preliminaries. Anna Hud- dleston returns as a senior, along with Kaisa Liljenwall (Jr.) and Emily Philbrook (So.). Maddy Brown (Sr.) swam in place of Lin in the finals at district, and Brown teamed with two other returners in the 400-yard freestyle relay — senior Cailin Bennett and sophomore Brooke Blanken- horn, along with Liljenwall. Also back for her senior season is Yaneli Aguilera. The Seaside boys also have returners with varsity experience: seniors Nick Konyha and Chris Quash- nick, and sophomores Shawn Collins and Leif DeWinter. The good news is that Crook County has moved out of the Dis- trict 1/4A, and will now compete at the 5A level, as will Scappoose. But while those two wrestling powerhouses leave the district, Woodburn comes in, dropping from 5A to 4A. Either way, it’s usually tough for everyone else in the district. As it was for Seaside last season, as the Gulls finished fourth out of five teams in the Cowapa League meet, then took ninth out of 11 in the dis- trict meet. Coached by Dan Taylor, Sea- side failed to qualify any individu- als for the state meet, but the Gulls did have a second-place finisher — Luke Nelson — in the league meet. After advancing to the cham- pionship match in the Cowapa League tournament as a sopho- more, Nelson is back for his junior season, and is slated to wrestle at 220 pounds. Andrew Gastelum returns as a junior and will wrestle at 126, a year after taking third at 113 in the league meet. The Gulls have five seniors on the roster, including three listed at 160 — Alfonso Alcantar, Gavin Meyer and Gio Ramirez. Tyler Shell will compete at 170, and Tra- vis Fenton is set to wrestle at 285.
