The Astoria wrestling pro- gram is under new direction, as the Fishermen open the 2018-19 season. Nick Roberts has stepped in to fill the spot vacated by Roy Sanchez, and the new coach is busy trying to build up the numbers for Astoria, which has struggled in recent years with low turnouts. The Fishermen are still ahead of where they were last year at this time, when they entered last season with just 10 wrestlers on the roster. Astoria had 14 to start the third week of practice, with freshmen taking up over half the roster. The list includes just two varsity returners — soph- omore Marcos Elena and junior Dalton Somers. Elena is slated to wrestle at 132 pounds, with Somers at 145. Somers will also serve as a co-captain with junior Sky- ler Smith. The Fishermen lost their only state qualifier (Trey Hageman) to graduation, along with Landon Law and Jeff Stutznegger. District 1 just got a little easier, as Crook County — the district and Class 4A state champion — has moved from District 1/4A to the 5A level. The district also lost Scap- poose (moved to 5A), along with Corbett, Gladstone and Madras, while Woodburn moves from 5A to 4A wres- tling, and will compete in District 1. The second, third, fourth and fifth-place teams in the district (Tillamook, Molalla, Estacada and Banks) are all back, and will be among the teams to beat. Lily Long, Sr. Maize Moyer, Sr. A storia swimmers are back in the pool, and looking to pick up where they left off last winter — which was a third-place finish for the boys at districts, and a list of girls qualifying for the state meet. Head coach Kathryn Zacher and the Fish are hoping to improve on those numbers in 2018-19. THE DISTRICT There’s no question that the 4A district in the north- west part of the state — Spe- cial District 1 — is one of the toughest at the 4A level. The proof is in the final standings of the state meet. Last year’s district cham- pion on the boys’ side, New- port, also finished as the state champion, scoring 74 points in the state meet to place well ahead of North Bend’s 48. Tillamook, the girls’ district champ, was fifth at state. Scappoose (second place in districts on the boys’ side), is no longer part of District 1, having moved to the 5A level. The powerhouse at New- port will likely be strong again, as will the Tillamook girls. Meanwhile, the Astoria teams are poised to make a move (up) in the standings. Ethan Sparks, Sr. fourth in the district meet last year, while setting three school records on Day 2 of the meet, in addition to qual- ifying two individuals and two relay squads for the state meet. The individual state qual- ifiers were both freshmen — Grace Peeler and Tori Smith — and both return for their sophomore seasons. Smith was the district champ in the 200-yard indi- vidual medley, and also qual- ified for state in the back- stroke, breaking a school record that had been held since 2000. The two talented swim- mers also made up half the two relay teams, along with Jazzy King and Megan Schacher, who have graduated. The Astoria girls have plenty of candidates to fill in those open spots on the relay squads, including return- ing senior Jenna Travers, along with two other first- Life happens... Meanwhile, the Astoria boys scored most of their dis- trict points with their depth, racking up 169 points but fail- ing to qualify any swimmers for state. The closest was freshman Davis Wingard, who is not on the preseason roster. On the other hand, the Fish have some good returners in seniors Ryder Dopp, Parker Ivanoff, Elias Simmons and Ethan Sparks, junior Riley Cameron, sophomore Nikolai Boisvert, and incoming fresh- man Rocky Rub.
