Veterans: The American Legion is planning a veterans museum

the county who served in the
war on the back, to go near
the Doughboy. The Ameri-
can Legion will soon bring the
concept before the city’s His-
toric Landmarks Commission,
Phillips said.
The influence of veterans
was on display throughout the
day’s celebrations.

ument, a bronze statue by
sculptor John Paulding named
“Over the Top at Cantigny”
in honor of the first major
U.S. victory in World War I,
and the base and restrooms
designed by architect Charles
T. Diamond.
The local American Legion,
formed by returning World
War I veterans, was one of the
first created in the U.S. in July
1919. Its members were soon
put to work as guards after a
major fire destroyed much of
Astoria in 1922.
The American Legion is
planning a veterans museum
in the upstairs of its hall on
Exchange Street. The hope is
to have it open by July, when
the group celebrates its centen-
nial and Astoria hosts the state-
wide American Legion con-
vention, Phillips said.
