The performances by return- ing starters Payton Pritchard and Paul White were right on cue, but the rest of the Ducks showed some rough spots that need work, espe- cially under the boards. Pritchard scored 22 points while White added 15 and No. 14 Oregon opened its season by rout- ing Portland State 84-57 victory Tuesday night. “We took a step in the right direction,” Altman said. “It just wasn’t smooth the way we like. “We’re going to have to get a lot more physical in everything we do. Our bigs weren’t creating space, and we’re going to face a lot more physical teams than this one was.” Ionescu gets triple-double, No. 3 Oregon women win Associated Press FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Sabrina Ionescu did what she does and Satou Sabally had a big game for No. 3 Oregon but junior Ruthy Hebard stole the show. Ionescu picked up her 11th triple-double, Sabally scored 23 points and Oregon opened the sea- son with a 115-36 win over Alaska on Tuesday night. Hebard, playing before her hometown fans, had 15 points despite being under the weather and was mobbed after the game. KNAPPA’S TAKALO IS LATEST LOGGER MVP The Daily Astorian I t’s a long list, and Eli Takalo is the most recent Knappa Log- ger to earn Northwest League Player of the Year honors, as the junior quarterback was voted as the league’s best player on offense. Neah-Kah-Nie senior Tristan Bennett was named Defen- sive Player of the Year, and the Pirates’ Chris Bennett was selected Coach of the Year, for lead- ing Neah-Kah-Nie to the league title. As always, Knappa had numer- ous first-team, second-team and honorable mention selections, as did Warrenton, in the Warriors’ first year as a member of the 2A league. Knappa players took 17 all- league spots, but only three of those positions were filled by seniors. Hachimura scored 33 points to help the third-ranked Bulldog to a 120-79 win over Idaho State in the season opener for both teams Tues- day night. Zach Norvell Jr. added 23 points for Gonzaga (1-0), which has the highest preseason ranking in school history. Norvell Jr. also added seven rebounds. “I was able to get hot for a lit- tle bit but when Rui got it going like that, we want to keep feeding him and play off of him,” said Norvell Jr. It was business as usual for Gon- zaga in the opening minutes of the game. The Zags pushed out to an early 18-7 lead, but the Bengals went on a 9-0 run spanning 2:35. Making the score 18-16 with 12:20 to go in the first half. Oregon State opens with 72-59 win over UC Riverside Associated Press CORVALLIS — Oregon State fell behind UC Riverside in the second half of their season opener, but a full-court press and a cou- ple of turnovers put the Beavers quickly back in control. “We know what we’re capa- ble of doing when we’re fired up,” Tres Tinkle said. “In our closed scrimmage, our exhibition game and even in practice, we know when we kind of turn up a notch everybody gets even more focused, energy comes up. We just needed a spark, so that was the main reason for that. PORTLAND — In search of his jump shot, CJ McCollum watched every single 3-pointer he took last sea- son looking for what he lost. Fortunately for the Portland Trail Blazers, he found it. McCollum scored 40 points and Portland beat Milwaukee 118-103 on Tuesday night to hand the Bucks their second loss in 10 games this season. “Whether I play well or not, I know UP NEXT: BLAZERS • Los Angeles Clippers (6-4) at Portland Trail Blazers (8-3) • Thursday, 7 p.m. TV: NSNW how much time I spend preparing,” McCollum said. “The only thing I saw was I had a lot of in-and-outs and I was shooting with a dead wrist. I wasn’t lock- ing my wrist out, so I just tried to lock my wrist out.” The result was a dazzling perfor- mance against one of the NBA’s best teams early this season. “A lot of credit to CJ. He had a heck of a night,” Bucks coach Mike Buden- holzer said. “Any time we made a bit of a run or felt like the momentum might be changing, McCollum hit a big shot.” McCollum, who entered shooting well below his career averages, went 17 for 26 from the field and added six assists. “It was tough,” Milwaukee big man Brook Lopez said. “He made some huge plays and some tough shots that definitely were contested.”
