Camp Kiwanilong PROGRAM OVERVIEW Camp Kiwanilong was built during the depression in 1936. The Astoria Kiwanis sponsored the project with labor and materials. While the Kiwanis built and maintained the buildings, it was the Depression-era Works Project Administration that cleared the land and built trails around the fledgling camp. Camp Kiwanilong PO Box 128, Warrenton, OR 97146 Before hosting its first young campers, the site that eventually became Camp Kiwanilong served as an experimental dune stabilization site for the Soil Conservation Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. Many different varieties of native and non-native trees and shrubs were planted as a part of this historic effort. Judge Guy Boyington oversaw the Camp Kiwanilong project including the construction of the first building of any size. It was named after the Judge; Boyington Lodge. In 2006, to meet the current and future needs, an addition to the Lodge was completed. From 1936 to 1975, Clatsop County leased the Camp Kiwanilong property to the Girl Scouts. By 1978, and after years of vacancy, the campsite was in severe disrepair. The county agreed to lease the camp to an independent board of directors to operate and maintain the facility as a non-profit organization called Camp Kiwanilong. The Camp Kiwanilong board of directors has overseen management of the camp since 1978. In 1989 we became a 501c (3) and in 2004; Clatsop County issued a 99 year lease. All expenses required to operate and maintain the camp are funded by revenue from camper registration fees, rental fees and charitable contributions. For capital projects and major repairs we apply for grants or hold fundraising events. Since Camp Kiwanilong maintains status as a 501(c) 3, your contributions may be tax deductible. “Sparkyships” Camp Kiwanilong’s Summer Youth Resident Program consists of a series of several five- to-seven day overnight camping sessions. Most are geared toward campers in grades three through eight. All programs are designed to provide a positive environment, nurture self-esteem, and develop lasting relationships. Summer Youth campers can look forward to all sorts of activities, including canoeing, swimming, archery, day hikes, arts & crafts, fishing, singing and campfires. Many Friends of Camp Kiwanilong donate funds to offer financial assistance (Sparkyships) to many children in our county who are in need. We work closely with teachers who recommend children whom they know will benefit from our Youth Program. Cash or Material Donations While Camp Kiwanilong leases its land from Clatsop County, it receives no funding from the county or any other government entity. All expenses required to operate and maintain the camp are funded by revenue from camper registration fees, rental fees and charitable contributions. Please contact the Camp Ranger’s Office if you would like to make a donation of any kind. Any and all donations are gladly welcomed! The Board fulfills this mission by maintaining Camp Kiwanilong as a non-profit, safe, unique, rustic camp and by improving its facilities and programs to best serve area youth of all backgrounds. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to keep “our campfires burning”! We couldn’t do it without your donations of materials, time and labor.
