Dancers enjoy the Dukes of Swing concert at the Fort Colum-
bia Theater in Chinook in 2017.
Flood said those attend-
ing can dance or just sit and
enjoy the music. The group
showcases tunes from the
Big-Band Era, plus other
styles of music.
“Delicious hors d’oeuvres
will be provided by local
restaurants,” Flood said.
The Aberdeen Elks
Lodge formed an orchestra
in 1912 and later a march-
ing band. The swing band
was formed in 1948 and its
musicians played at Elks’
national conventions. The
name Dukes of Swing was
adopted in tribute to Duke
Ellington.
The group includes pro-
fessional musicians, among
them high school music
teachers — and their former
students, some who gradu-
ated long ago. Several of its
musicians have played into
their 90s. The group has also
opened for Manhattan Trans-
fer and Big Bad Voodoo
