With their 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 sweep, the Spartans advance to the Sweet 16, while the season comes to a close for Astoria. Marist will play Sat- urday at Sisters. Astoria ended its season with five straight losses, including three in a row in league play that dropped the Lady Fishermen into fourth place in the league standings. Ranked No. 17 in the final OSAA rankings, Astoria finishes with a 9-12 overall record. Still, “we had a good season,” said Astoria coach Jessie Todd. “We had a lot of inexperience coming in after los- ing so many seniors the year before, so we didn’t really know what to expect. “But with a lot of these girls com- ing back and a good junior varsity pro- gram, it was a great season. They will grow from the experience, and they’ll know what it takes now.” Astoria led in both Games 1 and 2, before the Spartans rallied to win both. “The first two games were really close,” Todd said. “The girls really fought hard, we were talking, cele- brating and firing on all cylinders. We were right there with Marist, and I thought the match could have gone either way.” Kajsa Jackson led Astoria’s offen- sive attack with nine kills to go with two blocks, while Kes Sandstrom had eight kills in her final match. Tickets available for Baker vs. Astoria Julia Norris collected 12 assists, and Astoria was led defensively by Halle Helmersen (34 digs), Kelsey Fausett (30 digs) and Hailey O’Brien (19 digs). All four players return next year for the Fishermen. Seaside season ends in loss at Philomath PHILOMATH — The Seaside Lady Gulls made the long trip to Phi- lomath for a Class 4A regional volley- ball play-in match Tuesday, putting their 12-12 overall record up against the Warriors’ 17-9 mark. And Philomath improved to 18-9 with a three-game sweep over the Gulls, 25-11, 25-19, 25-16. Seaside boys top Banks, 9-0 WORLD SERIES SEASIDE — The Seaside boys soccer team tuned up for the post- season with a 9-0 win over Banks, in a Cowapa League regular sea- son finale Tuesday night at Broad- way Field. In other league action, Valley Catholic held on for a 1-0 win over Tillamook, giving the Valiants the Cowapa League championship. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for an injury-riddled Seaside team. “We got Dodger (Holmstedt) back for a half tonight, but we lost another (player),” said Seaside coach John Chapman. Still, “it was a great game,” he said. “Senior Chase Januik led his team to a solid win.” The Gulls led 6-0 at halftime, and goalkeeper Samson Sibony picked up the shutout in goal. Seaside must wait to find out where and when it will play next, although Chapman expects the No. 9-ranked Gulls to be on the road for their next game. AP Photo/David J. The Daily Astorian A limited number of reserved seats went on sale today for the Baker vs. Astoria 4A football play-in game Friday. Sales started at 8 a.m. in the Astoria High School main office, and will remain on sale until kickoff, 6 p.m. Friday at CMH Field. Reserved seats may be purchased for $10 or $8 based on availability and location. Gen- eral admission tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for high school age stu- dents and younger. Only OSAA-approved passes may be used for free admission for any round of the OSAA playoffs, including the Class 4A play-in round. Mookie Betts led off for the Red Sox with a popup that twisted first baseman David Freese as he tried to navigate the tight foul space near the stands and gauge the gusts. Lost, he overran the ball and it dropped behind him. Banks defeats Seaside girls BANKS — The Seaside girls soccer team won two of its last four games this season — something to build on for 2019. But the 2018 season ended Tuesday afternoon on a down note for the Gulls, as Banks scored a 2-0 win over Seaside. It was a key game for the Braves, who finish second in the Cowapa League standings with a 5-2-1 league record, behind Valley Catholic (7-0). Seaside finishes with a 4-9-1 record, the most wins for the Lady Gulls since going 4-8-2 in 2015. — The Daily Astorian
