Fishermen tune up for playoffs with 21-13 win By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian A game that was a little hazy and hard to figure out in the first place went from Friday night lights to Friday night fog at CMH Field. After two hours and 45 minutes of football and a halftime show that would rival the length of any Super Bowl halftime, the postgame cel- ebration for the Astoria Fishermen was com- pletely shrouded in fog — fitting after a 21-13 win over Valley Catholic. The two teams moved the ball up and down the field for 615 yards in total offense, only to combine for 34 points. The Fishermen lost four fumbles and the Valiants threw three interceptions. In the end, Astoria clinched third place in the Cowapa League standings and dropped to No. 12 (from 11) in the state rankings. The Fishermen host Baker in a play-in game Fri- day (6 p.m.). The Bulldogs (ranked No. 20) are coming off a 35-0 loss to La Grande, and have lost four of their last five. While the Fishermen continue to struggle at times on offense, it’s Astoria’s defense that could carry the Fishermen deep into the state playoffs. The Valiants had 142 yards rushing in the first half, and finished with 140 for the game. Valley Catholic’s minus two yards rushing and no points in the second half was typified by the Valiants’ final offensive possession of the game, a 16-play drive that resulted in no points. Driving for a possible tying touchdown, the Valiants had a first-and-goal at the Astoria 2-yard line. From there, Valley Catholic’s Trey Eberhart had three carries for minus eight yards, and on fourth down Astoria’s Michael Moore sacked Daniel Pruitt for a 10-yard loss. The Fishermen used their ground game to run out the clock, as Niko Caruana (168 yards rushing) and Ryan Stutznegger (109) both topped the 100-yard mark. In the second quarter, Stutznegger had a five-yard touchdown run and Caruana scored Ian Hunt rushes the ball for Astoria. on a 15-yard run to give Astoria a 14-13 lead at halftime. Caruana’s six-yard TD run in the fourth quarter was the only score of the second half. Astoria had 20 first downs, eight in the second quarter, while Eberhart had 123 yards rushing in the first half for the Valiants, but fin- ished the game with 121. Valley Catholic lost starting running back William Schultheis to an injury early in the first quarter. Justin Villa had two of Astoria’s three inter- ceptions for Astoria, and Dylan Junes had a third. Warrenton tops Gaston, closes in on playoffs WARRENTON — Warrenton bounced back from a loss last week with an easy 62-6 win Friday over Gaston in a Northwest League football game. Hordie Bodden Bodden had his second kickoff return for a touchdown in consecu- tive weeks for the Warriors, while Kenz Ram- sey broke the Warrenton school record for most point-after touchdown kicks in a game (eight), breaking the previous mark of seven set by Wes Balensifer in 1998. Sam Irwin led the Warrior defense with 10 tackles. Gio Martinez and Jacob Morrow each scored three touchdowns, as Warrenton led 42-0 by halftime. Warrenton plays Friday at Nestucca. Both teams will likely be in the state playoffs, while the winner will clinch third place in the North- west League standings. Knappa posts easy win over Nestucca KNAPPA — Two weeks after a loss to Neah-Kah-Nie, the Knappa Loggers have fully recovered and are right back in the running as one of the favorites in 2A football, following a 50-14 win Friday over Nestucca. The Loggers topped the 50-point mark for the fifth time this season, and completely shut down the Bobcats, who had scored a combined 116 points in their previous two games. Knappa had the game well in hand after just one quarter, leading 22-0. Tristan Wal- lace threw a touchdown pass to Eli Takalo, and Takalo later returned the favor, hitting Wallace for a second quarter score. The Loggers play Friday in Portland to face a struggling Portland Christian team. The Roy- als have lost six in a row, including a forfeit loss to Neah-Kah-Nie and a 54-6 loss to Nestucca.
