With one game remaining, the Lady Fishermen improve to 3-3-1 in league play, 5-5-3 overall. Valley Catholic (6-0) and Banks (4-2-1) still hold down the top two spots in the standings. The Braves host Seaside Oct. 23. Tilla- mook and Seaside are tied at 1-5 in league. Astoria finishes the regular season Wednesday at Valley Cath- olic, before playoffs begin. Seaside volleyball scores big wins SEASIDE — The annual Sea- side volleyball tournament took place all day Saturday at Seaside High School. And the host Gulls finished 2-0 in bracket play, as Seaside won two of three games vs. La Grande (18-25, 25-23, 17-15), and swept Cascade in the tournament finale, 25-16, 25-17. Warrenton also competed, and posted a 27-25, 17-25, 15-12 win over Ontario, before Cas- cade defeated the Warriors 25-15, 24-26, 15-8. The tournament brought in teams from Banks, Catlin Gabel, Corbett, Estacada, Molalla, North Marion, Rainier, Tillamook and Marist Catholic, which scored three-game victories over Tilla- mook, North Marion and Corbett. In Coos Bay, Astoria took part in the Marshfield tournament, where the host Pirates defeated Astoria 26-24, 25-17. Astoria girls ‘state’ their plans The Daily Astorian PORTLAND — The Astoria girls cross-country team is picking up momentum as the postseason nears. And with Astoria’s team depth and Scappoose no longer in the Cowapa League, the Lady Fishermen could be sending a team to the state meet for the first time in over a decade. Astoria placed second in the bronze division of the Warner-Pacific Classic, held Saturday at Lents Park in Portland. Class 6A Century won the girls’ team title with 56 points, followed by Astoria (60), Valley Catholic (63) and Ridgefield (113). Individually, the top two spots belonged to the Valiants (Taylor Isaac and freshman Georgia Hicken), with Astoria sophomore Sophie Long plac- ing third. She covered the 5,000-meter course in a personal best 20 minutes, 14 seconds. Isaac won in 19:15. Astoria teammate Lindsay Riutta took fifth in a personal best 20:32, and Andrew Fick/For The Daily Astorian The Astoria girls cross-country team, following their second-place fin- ish Saturday. Taylin Regier served up eight aces, Kourtney Tischer had 11 assists, and Vicki Ramvick pounded out six kills for the Loggers, who finish fifth in the Northwest League standings at 6-6 in league. Knappa opens the league play- offs Tuesday in a loser-out match at fourth-place Nestucca. The win- ner advances to play the third-place team. Hannah Dietrichs and Regier were a combined 27-for-27 from the service line, while Tischer had seven aces and Aiko Miller finished with six aces. — The Daily Astorian Astoria’s top finisher in a personal best 18:08 (31st). Nikolai Boisvert was Astoria’s second runner finishing in 18:54 followed by Parker Ivanoff (19:09, PR). “Anytime you have a day with 16 PRs, that’s a good day,” said Asto- ria coach Andrew Fick. “I was really proud of how our runners continue to step up and run courageously against fast fields. We still have some things to work on, and we know that we’re going to have strong competition going into districts, though it’s a good sign we continue to see the improve- ments that we’re seeing, and to have that positive momentum continuing to move with us.” He added, “We are getting bet- ter with race tactics and running as a complete team. You can see that with our girls. There’s an awareness that every point is going to make a dif- ference. Whether you are the first or sixth runner, you have to step up. Ally (Pritchard) and Abby (Groncki) run- ning in those middle spots have really made a big difference for us. The way they have been working together is just going to make us stronger coming into districts.” Astoria runs Wednesday against Seaside, in a 3,000-meter race at Cul- laby Lake. Tillamook Headlight Herald Knappa freshman Shane McMahan placed 10th in the recent Northwest League meet. AINIER — Knappa’s Robert Piña-Morton took second place in the Rainier Invitational, held Sat- urday at Rainier High School. It was the third race in five days for the Loggers. August Albers of Cedar Tree Chris- tian won the 5,000-meter race in 17 min- utes, 11 seconds, with Pina-Morton plac- ing second in 17:31, ahead of two runners from Class 6A Benson, which won the boys’ team title. Logger teammate Shane McMahan was 35th in 21:48. Two days earlier, Piña-Morton won the Northwest League Championship race for the second year in a row, finish- ing in 17:27, his second-best career time. The race was held at Blue Lake Park in Gresham. McMahan was 10th out 32 runners, as he took over a minute off his personal best and finished in 19:39. On Oct. 9, Knappa took part in the Bigfoot Invitational in Rockaway Beach, with Piña-Morton winning the 5,000- meter race in 20:06, ahead of Ilwaco run- ners Daniel Whiting (20:47) and Tristan Trudell (21:43). Seaside’s Luis Moreno (22:23) was fourth, and Forrest Cooley of Warrenton placed seventh (23:01). Ilwaco won the team title with 29 points, well ahead of Rainier and Warren- ton (74 apiece) and Seaside (94). Ilwaco made it a sweep, also winning the girls’ team title (52 points) ahead of Neah-Kah-Nie (67), Warrenton (76) and Seaside (84). Warrenton’s Adriana Dejesus took fifth in 26:55, ahead of Ilwaco runners Estella Sheldon (sixth, 27:18.35) and Carli Kem- mer (seventh, 27:18.58). Seaside fresh- man Elise Seppa was 10th in 28:07. win streak The Daily Astorian Astoria Middle School eighth- grade runner John Clement is on a win streak. Other than placing 33rd at the big Nike Portland meet Sept. 29, Clement has won his last five races. Over the weekend, he won the middle school 3,000-meter race in the Rainier Invitational, four days after winning the Bigfoot Invita- tional at Rockaway Beach. Clement had a personal best nine minutes, 55 seconds in win- ning the middle school race at the Warrenton Wreck Race, held Sept. 25 at Fort Stevens State Park. Teammate Hannah Groncki, also an eighth grader at AMS, won the girls’ race in the Rainier Invite (11:58), her first win since run- ning a personal record 11:00 in the Warrenton Wreck Race. Astoria’s Ella Zilli won the Bigfoot Invita- tional race. The Astoria Middle School team hosts the Astoria Viking Invitational meet on Thursday.
