SEASIDE — “The proudest moment of my coaching career,” is how first-year coach Demi Lund described her first league win with the Seaside volleyball team, which defeated Banks in four sets Tuesday night. Seaside’s 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20 victory gives the Gulls a 10-9 overall record, 1-3 in the Cowapa League standings (in a three-way tie for third with Astoria and Banks). “We definitely gained some momentum over the weekend (with a three-set win over Astoria in the Hood River Valley Tournament),” Lund said. “We’re finally playing with some confidence. “Banks is a well-rounded team, and if you give them an inch, they will take a mile,” she said. “So we didn’t let them get any big strings of points. We fought hard, and my seniors were really team leaders tonight.” Senior Tori Tomlin led the Gulls with 16 kills and five solo blocks, while senior Morgan Blodgett added 12 kills with three solo blocks and four block assists. “My middles were definitely the stars of the match,” Lund said. The Gulls have a crucial match Thursday at Astoria. SPORTS IN BRIEF Seaside tops Tillamook, still undefeated in league play SEASIDE — Seaside is on its first three-game win streak of the season, following a 2-0 victory late Tuesday night over Tillamook at Broadway Field. Sophomore Dodger Holmstedt scored both goals for the Gulls, who improve to 3-0 in league play, 6-3 overall. The No. 9-ranked Gulls play four straight road games, begin- ning Thursday at Banks. Tillamook scores historic win over Seaside TILLAMOOK — Tillamook scored its first league win of the season Tuesday, with a 1-0 his- toric victory over visiting Seaside in a Cowapa League girls soccer contest at Tillamook. Since joining the Cowapa League in 2007, the Cheesemak- ers were 0-19-1 against the Gulls, scoring a 0-0 tie with Seaside in their last meeting of 2017. Tillamook improves to 5-4 overall this season, while the Gulls drop to 2-6-1. Seaside hosts Banks at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Warrenton sweeps Clatskanie CLATSKANIE — Warren- ton took a trip to Clatskanie for a Coastal Range League volley- ball match with the Tigers, and the Warriors scored a quick three-set win, 25-10, 25-9, 25-7. The Lady Warriors (3-2 in league) keep pace with league lead- ers Willamina and Rainier, while Clatskanie drops to 1-9 overall. — The Daily Astorian NFL suspends Seahawks LB Kendricks indefinitely Associated Press RENTON, Wash. — The NFL suspended Seattle Seahawks line- backer Mychal Kendricks indefi- nitely on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty last month to federal insider trading charges. Kendricks was suspended under the personal-conduct pol- icy, said league spokesman Brian McCarthy. Valiants roll over Astoria, 5-0 The Daily Astorian T he defending state champions of 4A girls soccer paid a visit Tuesday night to CMH Field, and the Valley Catholic Valiants scored a 5-0 win over Astoria. Valley Catholic was coming off a 9-0 win over Seaside just one week earlier, so the Lady Fishermen had to feel good about a scoreless tie 20 minutes into Tuesday’s contest. Astoria’s back line of Maddie Sisley, Emma Biederman, Andrea Harris and Elle Espelien were turning away Valiant attacks, while the last line of defense — Astoria goalkeeper Baylee McSwain — made four saves over the first 20 minutes. But the Valiants finally picked up the game’s first goal in the 21st minute. After a long clear by a Valley Catholic defender, Valiant senior Kate MacNaughton gained control of a ball down the left sideline, dribbled past an Astoria defender and scored on a crossing shot to the right post. McSwain made two more saves over the next 14 minutes, before Valley Catholic senior Cal- lie Kawaguchi scored the first of her three goals, blasting an unassisted shot from 30 yards out for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Valley Catholic’s controlled passing game went to work in the second half, resulting in two more goals for Kawaguchi and another for MacNaughton. Astoria managed just two shots on goal the entire night (Meghan O’Meara and Elizabeth Whitsett), both saved by Valiant keeper Annma- rie Gallardo. Astoria in a Cowapa League boys soccer game Tuesday in Beaverton. “Valley Catholic is a very good team that plays the best passing game we’ve seen this sea- son, so they earned the win tonight,” said Astoria coach Lee Cain. The Valiants and Fishermen played to a 2-2 draw in the second half. Astoria scored on a free kick from Jonathan Jimenez, and Christian Medina-Perez tacked on the second goal for the Fishermen, who are still missing Michael Postlewait and Evan Randall from the lineup. Knappa volleyball team rallies for five-set win against Columbian Christian The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — Knappa rallied from a two games-to-one deficit to post a five-set win over Columbian Chris- tian in a Northwest League volleyball match Tuesday. With their 25-19, 24-26, 15-25, 25-19, 16-14 victory, the Loggers improved to 3-5 in league play. “It wasn’t easy and it was a battle in every game,” said Knappa coach Jeff Kaul. “It’s been a while since we have played a five-game match.” Knappa sophomore Megan Hell- berg served as the spark, Kaul said. “She did a great job running around making strange noises and telling everyone that they could do this,” Kaul said. “And then the crowd started get- ting into it, and once the noise started to rise in the gym so did the play and efforts of the team. “Volleyball is such an emotional sport and once the Loggers got out of their heads, they started playing some really good volleyball.” Hannah Dietrichs, Vicki Ram- vick and Taylin Regier combined for 13 service aces, while Sophia Carlson had 10 kills Aiko Miller added 20 digs. Regier and Dietrichs had six kills apiece, and Dietrichs was 27-for-30 at the service line, with four aces. Kourtney Tischer finished with 17 assists, four digs and four kills. “It was great to see the team dig deep tonight and take a win after being down 1-2,” Kaul said. “It takes a lot of heart to come back from that kind of deficit, losing two games in a row, but these ladies dug down and decided that they wanted this win and played as a team to get it.”
