Sir Francis Drake scholars convene in Astoria The Daily Astorian Recently, the Columbia River Mari- time Museum played host to the second annual meeting of the Sir Francis Drake Association of Oregon and California. The gathering brought together schol- ars in the fields of anthropology, survey- ing, navigation, and Oregon and Cali- fornia history, to celebrate Capt. Francis Drake’s 1579 anchorage in Nehalem Bay, and his subsequent survey land- claim of Neahkahnie Mountain in Man- zanita on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The keynote talk “How Did We Get Here” by Garry Gitzen, president of the Oregon Chapter, highlighted important 16th and 20th century books, articles and maps — uncovered as recently as the past 10 years — that helped to identify Drake’s five-week Northwest sojourn.
