The All-Star second base- man has been out since May 15, though he’s been playing in the minor leagues for the past week. Cano is ineligible for the postseason if Seattle makes it, but manager Scott Servais hopes the 35-year-old can help the Mariners get there as a ver- satile piece around the infield. Servais said the team will work Cano in slowly, getting him reps at first, second and third base. “We need to be smart in breaking him in,” Servais said. “He wants to get going, he wants to contribute right away. He’s missed playing, he’s missed his teammates and being around this whole thing. I know he wants to come in and do a lot. But again small little things.” Lowrie drives in 4 to back Manaea OAKLAND, Calif. — Bob Melvin might have a little better understanding of the anxiety other teams feel when his Oakland Ath- letics come roaring back in the late innings. Seattle nearly did it to the A’s. These AL West rivals are among the best at staying in games until the very end despite a big deficit. Jed Lowrie drove in four runs to back Sean Manaea, and the A’s held off a late Seattle rally to beat the Mariners 7-6 on Mon- day night in a matchup of playoff contenders. “We’ve done that a few times before,” Melvin said of his club’s comebacks. “The other end of it doesn’t feel so great. ... They have a deep lineup and obviously with their record in close games there’s no quit in them as well.” Seahawks-Raiders at Wembley LONDON — NFL games will be played at Wembley Sta- dium on three consecutive week- ends for the first time because the new home being built for English Premier League club Tottenham won’t be ready. Tottenham said Monday that it would be unable to host the Seat- tle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders on Oct. 14 due to “issues with the critical safety systems” at the 62,000-seat stadium in the final stages of construction. “We appreciate the support our partner the NFL has shown since the extent of this issue became evident today,” Totten- ham chairman Daniel Levy said Monday. — Associated Press LCYSA The LCYSA’s west field, which will be re- named ‘Jerry Boisvert Memorial Field.’ Photos by Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian The west grandstands of Hayward Field as they appeared in the mid-1990s. E The Daily Astorian The Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association fall season kicks off Sept. 8 at the Warrenton Soccer Complex on Ridge Road. Included in the opening day’s activities, the club is installing a sign on the West field, which will be renamed “Jerry Bois- vert Memorial Field,” in honor of the long- time area youth coach who died last year. “Most of our board will be there and opening day is always great energy,” said club president Fergus Loughran. Registration is underway for the fall recreational season. For more information or registration forms, go to the associa- tion’s website at lcysasoccer.com. Seahawks hope Mingo can be dual threat Associated Press RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Sea- hawks would be thrilled if Barkevious Mingo became the new version of what Bruce Irvin was during their championship run — strong on stopping the run in early downs, a threat as a rusher in passing situations. Doing so would mean Mingo is finally meeting the expectations that came with being the No. 6 overall pick five years ago, which has happened only briefly Barkevious during his first three stops Mingo in the NFL. Seattle made only a few free agent signings on the defensive side in the offseason and none has the chance to flash as much as Mingo because of what Seattle believes he could add to its revamped defense. And especially in a defensive scheme that is geared even more toward the lineback- ers with Ken Norton Jr. taking over as defen- sive coordinator. “It’s definitely finding roles for guys and getting to figure them out and who they are and all that,” coach Pete Carroll said. “He has done a lot of stuff, even back in college. Right now, to have him playing outside linebacker and also rushing in the nickel package, it’s just the right spot for him.
