5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2018 WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Moms of 11 children found at New Mexico compound arrested TAOS, N.M. — A message that people were starving, believed to come from someone inside a makeshift compound in rural northern New Mexico, led to the discovery of 11 children liv- ing in filthy conditions. The children, ranging in age from 1 to 15, were removed from the compound in the small community of Amalia — 145 miles northeast of Albuquerque and in an isolated high-desert area near the New Mexico-Colorado border. They were then turned over to state child-wel- fare workers. Two men were arrested during the search over the weekend. Siraj Wahhaj was detained on an outstanding warrant in Georgia alleging child abduction. Lucas Morten was jailed on suspicion of harboring a fugitive, Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said. Three women believed to be the mothers of the children — Jany Leveille, 35, Hujrah Wah- haj, 38, and Subhannah Wahha, 35 — were arrested today, Hogrefe said. The women and the men all face charges of child abuse. Hogrefe says police still are looking for 4-year-old AG Wahhaj, reported missing from Georgia’s Clayton County. His birthday is today. The search at the compound came amid a two-month investigation in collaboration with Clayton County authorities and the FBI, Hogrefe said. FBI agents had surveilled the area a few weeks ago but didn’t find probable cause to search the property. That changed when Georgia detectives for- warded a message to Hogrefe’s office that ini- tially had been sent to a third party, saying: “We are starving and need food and water.” What authorities found was what Hogrefe called “the saddest living conditions and pov- erty” he has seen in 30 years on the job. Other than a few potatoes and a box of rice, there was little food in the compound, which Hogrefe said consisted of a small travel trailer buried in the ground and covered by plastic with no water, plumbing and electricity. Hogrefe said the adults and children were without shoes and wore basically dirty rags for clothing and “looked like Third World country refugees.” The group appeared to be living at the com- pound for a few months, but the sheriff said it remains unclear how or why they ended up in New Mexico. Thousands left homeless by deadly quake on Indonesian island SENGGIGI, Indonesia — Thousands left homeless by a powerful quake that ruptured roads and flattened buildings on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok sheltered tonight in makeshift tents. Authorities said rescuers hadn’t yet reached all devastated areas and expect the toll of 98 dead to climb. It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok, a less-developed island compared with its more famous neighbor Bali, where AP Photo/Javier Fergo A firefighter works on an active blaze on a hillside in southern Portugal. Portugal tames wildfire; French cities ban cars LISBON, Portugal — Firefighters in Portugal were close to bringing a major, four-day wildfire near a popular tourist area under control today as sweltering weather gripped much of Europe. The Portuguese Civil Protection Agency said firefighters had contained 95 percent of the blaze in rolling hills by the country’s southern Algarve coast. Locals and tourists spent tense hours after dark Sunday as the huge blaze passed by the outskirts of Monchique, a town of 2,000 people 155 miles south of Lisbon. A mass of hot air from North Africa sent temperatures in Portugal and Spain over 113 degrees over the weekend. In France, where four nuclear reactors have been temporarily closed due to the heat, three cities banned the most polluting cars from the roads because of heat-linked ozone pollution. In Paris and Strasbourg, the ban concerned vehicles that are 12 years and older, while in Lyon only cars with a clean air sticker were allowed. In Germany, the grape harvest started on its earliest date yet amid an exceptionally hot sum- mer. The first grapes are used to make Federweisser, a young wine that gives the first hints about the year’s potential quality. The main harvest is expected to start in late August or early September. In Norway, authorities warned motorists to watch out for reindeer and sheep taking shel- ter from the heat in highway tunnels. The country has an estimated 220,000 reindeer and more than 800,000 sheep. Neighboring Sweden has been fighting an uncommon number of wildfires this summer, even above the Arctic Circle, and a European Union official pointed his finger at climate change. the strong tremors caused panic and damaged buildings. A July 29 quake killed 16 people and damaged hundreds of houses on Lombok, some of which collapsed in Sunday evening’s quake, measured at magnitude 7.0 by Indonesian authorities and 6.9 by the U.S. Geological Survey. Damage was “massive” in mountainous northern Lombok, where the quake was cen- tered. In several districts, more than half the homes were destroyed or severely damaged. A large mosque collapsed on worshippers in northern Lombok’s Lading-Lading village, and rescuers used a backhoe to search the debris. The number of victims was unknown. Some areas still hadn’t been reached 24 hours after the quake because of collapsed bridges, blocked and ruptured roads and the loss of power and communications. More than 230 people were seriously injured. Thousands of homes and buildings were dam- aged and those displaced camped wherever they could — in sports fields and on roadsides, cob- bling together ramshackle shelters and building campfires for warmth. In a statement, Trump said the 2015 interna- tional accord to freeze Iran’s nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions was a “horrible, one-sided deal” and said it left the Iranian gov- ernment flush with cash to use to fuel conflict Saudi Arabia expels Canadian ambassador over criticism DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia expelled the Canadian ambassador today and froze “all new business” with Ottawa over its criticism of the ultraconservative kingdom’s arrest of women’s rights activists — yet another warning to the West reflecting Riyadh’s newly assertive foreign policy. The sudden and unexpected dispute bore the hallmarks of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Sal- man, Saudi Arabia’s 32-year-old future leader, whose recent foreign policy exploits include the war in Yemen, the boycott of Qatar and Leba- nese Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s surprise res- ignation broadcast during a visit to the king- dom. Hariri later rescinded the resignation, widely believed to be orchestrated by Riyadh, and returned to Beirut. Analysts say the dispute between Riyadh and Ottawa shows Saudi Arabia won’t accept any outside criticism and will continue flexing its muscles abroad, especially as the kingdom enjoys a closer relationship with President Don- ald Trump. “This message is obviously not just being sent to Ottawa,” said Giorgio Cafiero, the CEO of Gulf State Analytics, a Washington-based risk consultancy. “It’s a message to countries across Europe and across the rest of the world that crit- icism of Saudi Arabia . has consequences.” The Saudi Foreign Ministry made the announcement early today, giving Ambassa- dor Dennis Horak 24 hours to leave the king- dom. It wasn’t immediately clear if he was in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia said it would recall its ambassador to Canada as well. SCHEDULE THE DAILY ASTORIAN A Videos showed screaming people running in panic from a shopping mall and a neighbor- hood in Bali where parked vehicles swayed. On Lombok, soldiers and other rescuers car- ried the injured on stretchers and carpets. Many were treated outdoors because hospitals were damaged. in the Middle East. “We urge all nations to take such steps to make clear that the Iranian regime faces a choice: either change its threatening, destabi- lizing behavior and reintegrate with the global economy, or continue down a path of economic isolation,” Trump said. Trump warned that those who don’t wind down their economic ties to Iranian “risk severe consequences” under the reimposed sanctions. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says renewed U.S. sanctions on Iran will be rigor- ously enforced and remain in place until the Ira- nian government radically changes course. Speaking to reporters en route from a three-nation trip to Southeast Asia, Pompeo said today’s reimposition of some sanctions is an important pillar in U.S. policy toward Iran. He said the Trump administration is open to look- ing beyond sanctions but that would “require enormous change” from Tehran. “We’re hopeful that we can find a way to move forward but it’s going to require enormous change on the part of the Iranian regime,” he said Sunday. “They’ve got to behave like a nor- mal country. That’s the ask. It’s pretty simple.” European foreign ministers said today they “deeply regret” the reimposition of U.S. sanctions. A statement by European Union foreign pol- icy chief Federica Mogherini and foreign min- isters of France, Germany and the United King- dom insisted that the 2015 Iran nuclear deal “is working and delivering on its goal” of limiting Iran’s nuclear program.
