10A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2018 CONTACT US FOLLOW US facebook.com/ DailyAstorianSports Gary Henley | Sports Reporter ghenley@dailyastorian.com Seaside grad Kilday earns academic award The Daily Astorian Seaside High School graduate Alli- son Kilday, who just completed her junior year of track at Occidental Col- lege in Los Angeles, recently received an all-academic award for having above a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. She was ranked among the top 35 individuals in Division III in her event. The Occidental men’s and wom- en’s track teams were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Coun- try Coaches Association all-academic squad, for posting better than a 3.10 GPA as a group. “We couldn’t be more proud of the academic achievements the teams and individuals honored for their hard work in the classroom and on the track,” Occidental head coach Rob Bartlett said. “We strive to provide our student-athletes with the opportunity to thrive in every aspect of their Occi- dental lives and it’s fantastic to see so many Tigers doing just that.” The Tigers had a strong season in competition as well, with seven ath- letes making the national champion- ship meet and four winning all-Amer- ican honors. Kilday set personal records last spring in the 200 meters (27.44 sec- onds) and 400 meters (62.10), both March 16 at the Redlands Invitational, as well as the 800 meters (2:23.23) and 400-meter hurdles (65.12, seventh all- time at Occidental). The former Gull, who is major- ing in economics at Occidental, was a 2017-18 team captain for the Tigers. Occidental College Seaside’s Allison Kilday, left, had several personal best times on the track in the spring, and earned an all-academic award off the track. SPORTS IN BRIEF Knappa’s Coffey named player of the week The Daily Astorian Knappa’s Ryker Coffey was named the AA Legion Player of the Week for the Lower Columbia base- ball club, for his efforts last week. Coffey, a sec- ond baseman who will be a senior at Knappa in the upcoming school year, spent time Ryker playing for both Coffey Lower Colum- bia’s AA and AAA Legion teams this summer. Last week, Coffey had a two- run, walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the seventh to help Lower Columbia’s AA team, Com- petitive Athletics, win its final game of the summer over the Longview 15’s, 4-3. Knappa Loggers honored in Hillsboro The Daily Astorian T o the winners go the spoils — and the parades and special recognition nights. The Knappa baseball program con- tinues to be honored for winning back-to- back 2A state titles, as the Loggers were recently introduced during a Hillsboro Hops game, and will take part in a parade later this month. A group of Knappa players and coaches were introduced July 26 at Ron Tonkin Field, as the minor league baseball team hosted (and beat) the Boise Hawks. The Hops are Hills- boro’s Class A short season affiliate of the Ari- zona Diamondbacks. Knappa’s Dale Takalo threw out the honor- ary first pitch, and Logger players were intro- duced midway through the game. “They did something for us last year, when they gave us tickets and announced our team over the PA, but this year was a little bigger,” said Knappa coach Jeff Miller. “They invited us up again, and Dale got to throw out an hon- orary pitch. “They had us out on the field and men- tioned our back-to-back titles and three in four years, and read off a bunch of our hit- ting and scoring stats. It was a real nice night. The Hops won, they had great weather and fireworks.” The summer baseball may be over with for Knappa, but the Loggers are still keeping busy. Besides their appearance at the Hops’ game, Knappa players will ride their own float in the upcoming Regatta parade, then will have a special fundraiser the following day. Knappa players and coaches will take part in the Regatta’s Grand Land parade Satur- day, Aug. 11, and on Aug. 12 the Loggers will host a Bean Bag tournament and barbecue at Teevin Field, Knappa’s home field behind Hilda Lahti Elementary school. Sign-in and registration is from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m., and the tournament begins at 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration by Aug. 10 is $25 per team, $30 the day of the event. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Knappa baseball team’s spring road trip next season. Mariners make outfield upgrade getting Maybin from Marlins SEATTLE — Jerry Dipoto thought he was done making deals a day before the non-waiver trade deadline after remodeling the Seattle Mariners bullpen. The Mariners’ ever-active baseball boss just couldn’t help himself when an outfield upgrade became available. Seattle acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, giv- ing the Mariners a boost going into the final two months of the regular season. Seattle landed Maybin in exchange for minor league infielder Bryson Brig- man and international bonus pool allotment. Dale Takalo throws the honorary first pitch. The proceeds from this year’s race will go to the Christy Miethe Scholarship Fund. Sponsored by Lower Columbia Hospice and Teevin Brothers Land and Timber, the walk/run begins at Woody’s Wabbits on Allen Road in Knappa. Registration fee the morning of the walk is $30.
