After a tough 6-2 loss Saturday to West Salem — in which the Gulls stranded 13 base runners — Seaside won a closer-than-it-should-have-been 7-6 game over the Summit Storm, on the final day of the Division 1 state tournament at Crescent Valley High School. The Gulls went 2-1 in the tourna- ment to finish third. In Sunday’s championship game, Churchill rallied from an 8-5 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to defeat West Salem, 9-8. Summit was coming off a 7-6 semi- final loss to Churchill, a game in which the Storm led 6-3 going into the bot- tom of the seventh. “I truly felt like West Salem was a game we should have won,” said Sea- side coach Dan McFadden. “We hit the ball hard — just everything we hit was right at ‘em.” Sunday’s consolation game included a nightmare start for Summit. In the top of the first inning, Gage McFadden drew a leadoff walk for the Gulls, which was followed by Pay- ton Westerholm’s infield single. Alex Teubner reached on an error, Dun- can Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run, and Dylan Meyer singled to center to score Westerholm and Teubner. Brayden Johnson and Isaias Jantes drew two more walks, and following a pitching change, Meyer scored on a fielder’s choice for a 5-0 lead. Travis Fenton’s base hit to center brought in Johnson to make it 6-0 after one inning. The Gulls did not score again until the fifth, when Westerholm had a two- out single, then scored on a double by Teubner. Summit made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 7-3, Summit’s Dylan Ruhl doubled to center to score Brady Scar- borough to make it 7-4. One out later, Ben Capozzola’s sin- gle scored Ruhl, and Joe Cross fol- lowed with a base hit that brought in Evan Scalley, cutting Seaside’s lead to 7-6. A hit up the middle by Zi Lemas was knocked down by Westerholm at shortstop, and Capozzola — the tying run — was gunned down at the plate on a Westerholm-to-Teubner throw to end the game. Johnson got the win for the Gulls, allowing seven hits with one strikeout and three walks. “Brayden threw fantastic,” coach McFadden said. “I did go out and talk to him in the seventh, but he just said, ‘I got this.’ The way it was going, it was just a gut instinct I had to keep him in.” Four Summit pitchers allowed 10 hits, with Westerholm and Teubner collecting three apiece. “It was a good tournament for us,” McFadden said. “We played some good teams, and I really feel like the guys are starting to turn a corner. “When we’ve got Brayden or Gage on the mound, with Payton at short and Duncan at third … we’re pretty good.” West Salem 6, Gulls 2 CORVALLIS — Seaside left 13 runners on base in a 6-2 loss to West Salem, in Saturday’s semifinal game. West Salem scored three runs in the first inning, on three hits and a three- base error. The Titans scored three more in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Andrew Zellner. Meanwhile, the Gulls stranded run- ners at second and third in the second inning and left the bases loaded in the third, before manufacturing a run in the fourth. Seaside left runners at second and third again in the fifth, then began a potentially big comeback in the sixth. Jacob Derby had a two-out infield single, Gage McFadden reached on an error, and Payton Westerholm singled to center load the bases. Alex Teubner was hit by a pitch to force in a run, before relief pitcher Clayton Friedman struck out the next batter, as the Gulls left the bases loaded. Seaside clinched its spot in the semifinals with a 6-5 win over Leba- non Friday afternoon. Gage McFadden threw four-and- a-third innings before giving way to Johnson. Astoria’s Hageman has big week for Lower Columbia The Daily Astorian NEWPORT — The Lower Colum- bia Baseball Club ended a four-day stay in Newport with a 15-8 win Sunday over the Gorge Hustlers (The Dalles) at Frank Wade Park. Sponsored by Hilander Dental, the Lower Columbia club pounded out 15 hits and built a 10-4 lead after two innings. Hilander’s Zach Brown was 3-for-4 and scored three runs with six RBIs, while teammate Trey Hageman was 2-for-2 with four runs scored. Hageman had a double and a home run, and also drew two walks. Hilan- der’s four pitchers (Brown, Kaleb Miller, Ethan Lindstrom and Taite Hensley) gave up 12 hits with eight strikeouts. In Friday’s game against “503 Base- ball” out of Milwaukie, Hilander gave up a home run in each of the first two innings, and trailed 5-2 after two innings in an 8-5 loss. The Clatsop County connection still had a big day for Hilander, as Knappa’s Dale Takalo and Miller each had two hits. Miller had a double, then added a home run in the seventh inning. Miller was also hit by a pitch and drove in a run. Hageman pitched four innings in relief, giving up six hits. The Corvallis Marketmen defeated Hilander 14-2 Saturday afternoon, with Hageman scoring one of the two runs. Hilander Dental (19-16-1 overall) returns to action today in a loser-out game vs. Kirkland at Issaquah (Wash.) High School. The winner advances to the AAA state tournament, July 28-Aug. 1 at Centralia, Washington. Action underway in 108th Coast Invitational The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — Match play begins today in the 108th annual Oregon Coast Invita- tional, following a weekend of qualifying at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. Adam Harrington of Port- land Golf began his qualifying round with a birdie on the first hole and an eagle on No. 2, and went on to win medalist honors Saturday in the grand champi- ons division. Harrington shot a 6-under- par 66 to finish ahead of Avery Keating (68) and Mike Swin- gle (69). In Sunday’s qualifying, Portland Golf Club’s Gigi Stoll had a 2-under 71 to win the women’s medalist award. Returning champions in this year’s tournament include back-to-back winner (2016 and ‘17) Riley Elmes in the grand champions division. Ten-time winner Lara Mack Tennant, who has won two of the last three women’s titles, returns, along with Matt Elmes (junior/ seniors), Bret Stevens (seniors) and Larry Wobbrock (super seniors). Other medalists from a weekend of qualifying included Columbia Edgewater’s Bill Winter, who shot a 5-under par 67 in the junior/seniors division. Astoria’s Scott Mel- rose carded a 2-under 70 to win seniors’ qualifying. And Michael Healy of Columbia Edgewater shot a 4-under 68 in the super seniors. In the new women’s seniors division, Terry Matson of Pumpkin Ridge had the top score with an 81. Match play starts today in the grand champions and junior/seniors divisions, and action continues daily through Saturday at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. Healy’s pair of 3-run homers lifts M’s over White Sox 8-2 Associated Press SEATTLE — Knowing Robinson Cano will be back soon, Ryon Healy wants to show he deserves to keep Seat- tle’s first base job. Healy hit a pair of three- run homers for a career-best six RBIs, lifting the Mariners over the Chicago White Sox 8-2 Sunday. “I want to help this team win every single day whether I’m in the lineup or not,” Healy said. “And I’m going to find a way to do that. When Cano comes back or whatever, I don’t care.” Cano is eligible to return in mid-August from an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test. Seattle acquired sec- ond baseman Dee Gordon in Cano’s absence, and Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said last week that Cano will play every day when he returns, mostly at first. “Things like that are out of my control,” Healy said. “I’m not a guy who needs to try harder. I think I try too hard at times. It isn’t the first time this has happened to me or anyone else in this game.” CORVALLIS — The summer season came to a close for the Warrenton junior baseball team Friday afternoon, in a 10-0 loss to Silverton in the Division 1 state tournament at Crescent Valley High School. Silverton pitcher Hunter Runion shut down the War- renton bats, tossing a one-hit- ter in the five-inning shutout. Meanwhile, the Foxes scored in every inning but the first. After scoring two in the second inning, Silver- ton loaded the bases with no outs in the third. A single to right brought in the first run, before pitcher Dalton Knight retired the next two batters in order. The Warriors almost made it out of the inning with no further damage, but a blooper to shallow right field brought in two more runs for a 5-0 lead. The Foxes had another three base hits to start the bottom of the fourth, the big blast by Jacoby Quintero, a three-run homer to deep center. Silverton finished off the Warriors in the fifth, as Run- ion’s single to center scored the 10th and final run. A senior-to-be at Silver- ton, Runion recently signed a letter-of-intent to play at Montana State in 2020. “I feel comfortable in saying that he was the best pitcher our boys have ever faced,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “He showed why he’s a Division 1 prospect.” Knight had the lone hit for the Warriors, a leadoff single in the fourth inning. “We faced a very good team and a very good pitcher,” Wolfe said. “But one game does not define a season. Your whole season is defined by the body of work, and we made the state tour- nament in both the spring and the summer, with a com- bined record of 29-12. “We got back to play- ing Warrenton baseball,” he said. “These kids had never played in a state tournament, and now they’ve played in two (spring and summer). They’ve never had a winning season, and now they’ve had two.
