7A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 Trial: Has been rescheduled for this December Continued from Page 1A Brown did not object. The estimated five-day trial, which was set to begin July 31, has been rescheduled for December. “I’m willing to grant a set over, but it’s been really dif- ficult to schedule this case,” Matyas said. Since the case began, lawyers have filed a num- ber of motions, many of which asked for a continua- tion due to scheduling con- flicts. Other motions cen- tered on pieces of evidence that surfaced as information was shared between police in North Dakota — where the abuse was reported — and Seaside — where the abuse allegedly occurred. Seaside Police Sgt. Jason Goodding was investigat- ing the case before he was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2016. Goodding was a witness who would have provided key details about two child pornography charges, according to court documents. Brown filed a new indictment last year, and those two charges were dropped. Earlier this month, fol- lowing a number of lengthy hearings in which a host of witnesses were called, Matyas denied part and granted part of a motion to exclude evidence regarding Gustafson’s past sexual ten- dencies, including incest sto- ries found on his computer and alleged possession of child pornography. The Facebook posts began one day after the judge’s rulings. “All evidence is not allowed. Try wrapping your head around that one,” part of the post read. In addition to other com- plaints about the justice sys- tem, the woman lamented the fact Gustafson was able to hire an attorney while the victim could not choose the prosecutor. “We tell our daughters to speak up, but what we don’t tell them — there will be men being paid to fight the truth, those evil lawyers will call your baby girl a liar,” she wrote. “You, on the other hand, get a court-ap- pointed attorney, over- worked and underpaid. You have no choice in who rep- resents you. Because it’s not actually you against the per- vert, it’s the state against the pervert.” After reviewing the Face- book posts over the next few months, Hood may file a motion to move the case out of Clatsop County, he said. “It is a terrible situation that has developed here.” In the first post, the woman said she didn’t want to discourage people from reporting sex abuse but noted that court proceedings “will rip and tear at you for a long time.” “And I don’t know that anyone ever ‘wins,’” she wrote. “But as the trial date approaches, the fear creeps in. How many more safe days do we have? And will my daughter’s fight for jus- tice be in vain?” ‘I’m willing to grant a set over, but it’s been really difficult to schedule this case.’ Judge Cindee Matyas Traffic: Congestion and driver confusion have been common Continued from Page 1A “That was an unintended con- sequence,” Workman said. “We’ve had lots of near misses.” Officers have also seen issues with drivers making illegal U-turns in the area. When turning left from the highway onto Ensign Lane, the street signal — rather than solid green and yellow lights — flashes a yellow light. The flashing yel- low light means people turning left should yield to oncoming traffic, which can come in droves on the busy road. While nothing is finalized, offi- cials at the meeting discussed reprogramming street signals, as well as possibly reconfiguring islands. In the next few weeks, drivers can expect changes to signs, potential left-turn restric- tions and road striping. One sign, for instance, may indicate near the exit from the Walmart parking lot that there is no left-turn access to the highway. Warrenton police have also upped patrols. “The whole area, with all the businesses being concentrated there, you’re going to have a lot of traffic,” Workman said. “When the signage and the barriers don’t clar- ify things, that’s when we need to fix it.” Traffic congestion and driver confusion have been common with constant construction over the past few years. More businesses are on their way, including those that will be located at the future site of the North Coast Business Park near 19th Street and Ensign Lane. In turn, officials will continue to grapple with traffic for the foresee- able future. “These are typically good prob- lems to have,” Moore said. “When you experience some growth, you have to figure out how to deal with it.” Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Vehicles make a left turn off Highway 101 onto Ensign Lane near the new Walmart. Book bike: Kreider plans to be out at least twice a week Continued from Page 1A but also tailored to fit the event Kreider is attending. This could mean a collec- tion of Astoria-specific books and maritime history books for a Columbia River Maritime Museum event or the Astoria Sunday Mar- ket, or books for younger readers if Kreider is headed to a school. Kreider plans to be out on the bike at least twice a week for several hours throughout the summer. Pearson said there are no hard and fast objectives for the book bike, no monthly quotas to meet in terms of books borrowed or new library cards issued. It is purely an outreach tool, mem- orable and fun. “I think the smiles on peo- ples’ faces already mean it’s a success,” he said.
